Board Workshop

Moving Toward the Next Strategic Plan

Omaha Public Schools concluded its 2020-2025 Strategic Plan of Action with a public review of the plan and progress toward goals at a Board of Education workshop in June 2025.

Chief of Staff Kanyon Chism, Ed.D., Chief School Improvement Officer Susanne Cramer and Chief Student and Community Services Officer Lisa Utterback grounded the discussion about developing our next strategic plan in Omaha Public Schools mission, vision and values:

  • Mission: To prepare all students for success in college, career and life.
  • Vision: Every student. Every day. Prepared for success.
  • Values: Results, equity, accountability, leadership and joy.

Cramer reviewed our Omaha Public Schools Moonshot, which, with Board of Education support, launched in Aug. 2024. Since that time, Omaha Public Schools has engaged hundreds of staff, families, students, partners and experts to build a shared plan. Our district has made progress moving from “random acts of improvement” toward aligned goals, behaviors and processes, Cramer explained. Teams of staff across schools and district offices are leveraging real-time data to guide improvement work. They are quickly testing and measuring different approaches to overcoming a challenge, building upon success.

During the last school year, Omaha Public Schools earned systemwide accreditation from Cognia. Evaluators highlighted well-managed classrooms and positive learning environments across our district. They encouraged our schools to consider how to catalyze this culture to raise expectations, improve progress monitoring and create more consistent experiences for students in the Omaha Public Schools. The Cognia feedback is key in developing our next strategic plan.

Cramer shared the many ways Omaha Public Schools staff have listened to the voices of employees, students, families, partners and community members during the past year. Board members explored potential success measures of the next strategic plan. A draft is anticipated in December 2025, with possible approval in February or March 2026.
