NEW ORLEANS – December 7, 2021 – The OPSO Re-Entry Program has partnered with the University of New Orleans on a new course that aims to teach re-entry inmates skills needed to enter the workforce upon release from custody.

The 12-session course covers a variety of topics including creating a resume, applying and interviewing for jobs, and practicing public speaking. By the end of the course, successful students will have produced a resume, an informational speech to pitch to potential employers, as well as a business plan.

UNO has donated to the Orleans Justice Center 12 computers that are an integral part of the re-entry course taught by UNO instructors. Re-entry inmates use the computers to either create or shore up their online presence since many employers now review a job applicant’s accounts on social media and employment platforms like Google, Facebook and Indeed.

Gregory Carroll, director of inmate programs, said one group of re-entry offenders has already earned certificates from the UNO-Orleans Justice Center Re-Entry Course and a second cohort is underway. “We hope this re-entry course serves as a launching pad, to not only get a job, but possibly to start a business or further their education,” he said.

Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman said, “The Orleans Justice Center Re-Entry Course provides inmates with the skills and tools necessary to succeed as hardworking members of the greater New Orleans community. The Sheriff’s Office is pleased to collaborate with the University of New Orleans in rebuilding the lives of inmates who can use their newly acquired skills to positively impact their families, and contribute to the well-being of our city.”
