At the time of this writing, it is 80 degrees outside. Time to get ready for some Spring fishing. As Rush Limbaugh said at Christmas, “I don’t know anyone that will miss 2020”. Personally, I have not been a fan of Virtual meetings this past year. My hope is that the OPTU members will be able to meet face/face again soon.
I am writing to let you know that one of our past presidents and current member was appointed to the Arizona Game and Fish Department Commission by Governor Ducey. Clay Hernandez will take his position on the Commission soon. Clay has been a lifelong outdoorsman and loves to hunt and fish. He has been a valuable advocate for Southern Arizona for years. He is also a friend of mine.
Clay will offer a good deal of insight, knowledge and logic to the work of the Commission. He is a wonderful representative from Southern Arizona. The OPTU is proud to have one of our “Favorite Son’s” speaking up for the sportsmen and women in Arizona. As always, Clay could use our support. The AZGFD Commission meetings are Virtual. Please consider attending a meeting and offer your feedback for the Commission members. I believe the Commissioners need to hear from us.
Congratulations to Clay Hernandez on his selection to the AZGFD Commission. He will be a valuable asset to the AZGFD and the citizens of Arizona for years to come.

We have a very special guest presenting at the OPTU meeting on March 3rd at 6:30pm. World-renowned fly tyer and fly fisher Tim Flagler is going to be joining us to discuss euro-nymphing techniques, and will show us how to tie a few flies for euro-nymphing. Tim is well known for his instructional fly-tying videos featured on his YouTube channel Tightline Video, where you can view nearly 600 fly tying videos.
He also has a web site,
This will be a 2-hour meeting. Tim will be presenting on euro-nymphing during the first hour, and will spend the second hour showing how to tie euro-nymphing flies. He is going to go over tying the Sulphur Perdigon, Frenchie Nymph & Lance Egan’s Red Dart. If you want to checkout the flies before the meeting, you can watch Tim's videos with the links below.

OPTU was awarded the Club Excellence Award from Project Healing Waters. The CEO of Project Healing Waters, Todd Desgrosseilliers, presented the award to our board, Robin Marsett, and several of our members in Project Healing Waters. OPTU has earned this recognition with our ten year plus support of our local program.
An extra special thanks goes out to Robin Marsett, Jim Owen and Joe Fagan for helping to kick start OPTU's work with PHWFF, and for their continued support. They have all put in a great amount of time and effort into helping Project Healing Waters, and have had a tremendous impact on many lives. Bryan Eto, Joe Vitelli, Whitey Kuebler and many more have also helped PHWFF immensely, and we are all extremely grateful for their great work and accomplishments. A big thank you also goes out to all of our PHWFF members. We thank you for your service, and are looking forward to continuing to support PHWFF for many years to come.
