Oregon Chapter of the ACC Newsletter - March 2018
President's Message
The ACC Oregon Chapter may be small by some measures, but 2017 showed how mighty it is by managing a great variety of CLE programs to bring to our members in addition to several social events throughout the year. We even had the opportunity to bring our families into the mix last year.

We continued to build finance skills with an outstanding Finance/M&A program in collaboration with Willamette University's MBA in January. There was the brilliant business strategy event sponsored by Tonkon Torp LLP and held at NIKE's World Campus. We considered in-house counsel as a witness with the help of Markowitz Herbold PC, and talked about what happens if an entire function is transitioned out of a company with Lane Powell PC. We learned more about Oregon's new pay equity law with Barran Liebman LLP and discussed ethical dilemmas with Ogletree Deakins PC. We even had the chance to enjoy the summer sun on a rooftop in the Pearl courtesy of Tonkon Torp after hearing about what our legislators were up to in 2017.

Our chapter also came together to toast the new year, play billiards, watch a Portland Thorns game with our families, and--for the first time in our chapter’s history--our members participated in a charity drive with the Oregon Food Bank raising over a thousand dollars to help eliminate hunger.

The past year is an accomplishment for which I extend a heartfelt thanks to our board members for their energy and our sponsors for their inexhaustible creativity. I'd also like to thank Bonnie Page, whose term as Chapter President just ended, for managing it all with rare vigor.

My hope is to build upon this energy in 2018. We just hosted another business event in collaboration with Willamette MBA in February and are planning another business strategy event at NIKE in May. We are also working on a number of other CLEs and social events to fill out the calendar year.

We approached some of you for recommendations for CLE topics, and I ask that you not hesitate to contact me or any board member with your ideas and recommendations on what we can do to help you get more from our organization.
Lastly, the board extends a welcome to our new Platinum sponsor, Holland & Knight LLP!

I hope to see you at one of our 2018 events.

Best,
Kat

ANOTHER POTENTIAL LANDMINE FOR EMPLOYERS: OREGON PAY EQUITY BILL SIGNED BY GOVERNOR

By Jennifer A. Nelson, Ogletree Deakins PC
Last year, Governor Kate Brown signed into law House Bill 2005, which created considerable new obligations and areas of liability for Oregon employers.

The law took effect in October 2017, and prohibits pay discrimination on the basis of protected class, defined as race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, marital status, veteran status, disability, or age. In other words, employers may not pay employees performing comparable work at different rates of pay because of their membership in one of these protected classes.

The law will further prohibit employers from screening job applicants based on current or past compensation and from determining compensation for a position based on a prospective employee’s current or past compensation. Employers will be able to inquire only about a job applicant’s salary history after making a job offer including a compensation amount.

CLE CREDITS FOR PRO BONO

Did you know you can get one hour of CLE credit for just two hours of pro bono services?

Through the Oregon State Bar's Certified Pro Bono Program, attorneys can do good work and get CLE credit at the same time. Participants do not need PLF coverage to participate in the program, and pro bono opportunities range from one-time projects to long-term representation. Here are just some of the nonprofit organizations you can assist:

  • Catholic Charities Immigration Services
  • Disabilities Rights Oregon
  • El Programa Hispano Taxpayer Clinic
  • Innovation Law Lab Big Immigration
  • Legal Aid Services of Oregon
  • Lewis & Clark Small Business Clinic
  • National Crime Victims Law Institute
  • OSB Appellate Pro Bono Program
  • OSB Military Assistance Panel
  • St. Andrew Legal Clinic
  • Student Legal Services at PSU
  • U.S. District Court Pro Bono Program
  • Victims Rights Law Center
  • Willamette Clinical Law Program
  • Youth, Rights & Justice

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR!

On January 11, Barran Liebman LLP helped members of the Oregon Chapter of the ACC ring in 2018 at Barlow Artisanal Bar in downtown Portland.

This was the second year in a row that Barran Liebman hosted this festive occasion, and they pulled out all the stops! In addition to festive cocktails featuring the ACC logo and a large array of wonderful hors d'oeuvres, members were also treated to two tarot card readers--both of whom had long lines throughout the evening!

Midway through the evening, Barran Liebman staff held a ''countdown" to 2018 replete with a champagne toast and "snow" falling from Barlow's ceiling!

Members also participated in a fun and challenging trivia contest about New Year's traditions. After the countdown, two lucky ORACC members won bottles of sparkling wine from premiere Willamette Valley winery Argyle for the most correct answers in the trivia contest.

Thank you so much to all the attorneys and staff at Barran Liebman LLP for once again ushering in the New Year with our chapter! We look forward to more events with their team this year.

We've got more great social and networking opportunities planned for ORACC members throughout 2018. Please visit our website for more information.
