ORC System News:

New 2023 ORC VPP, ORCsy VPP and Rules

The 2023 ORC Rules, VPP versions and example certificates are now published and available online at www.orc.org. This includes all rule books, the ORC VPP, and the ORCsy VPP for Superyachts. The ORC Sailor Services portal is also updated to provide test certificates, Speed Guides, and Target Speeds based on the 2023 VPP.

Rating offices around the world have already started issuing 2023 certificates for their customers. The first was in Argentina, just in time for use at the Rolex Circuito Atlantico Sur regatta in Buenos Aires and Punta del Este - Matias Capizzano captured the photo above from that event.

Details on what technical developments and rules have changed for 2023 can be found here.

Example ORCi, ORC Club and ORCsy certificates are now available for review. There have not been many changes in the information and layout from 2022, but each example has a guided tour of the features found on each. Learn more at this link.

Seminars prepare for the 2023 season

The ORC tech team has already been busy preparing measurers and race officials for the busy upcoming 2023 season with a measurement seminar held in Urk, NED this month. Another is planned for this weekend (3-5 Feb) in Malta ahead of the 2023 ORC European Championship held there over 23 April - May 1st. More info on this event is here.

In addition to these, presentations are being planned ahead of major ORC races in the coming season. These include the Bayview-Mackinac Race at Bayview Yacht Club (1 Feb) and the Chicago-Mackinac Race at Chicago Yacht Club (11 Feb).

Laser scanning forms an important backbone to the accuracy of ORCi certificates. Techniques in scanning and processing of cloud scans was presented at a seminar in Urk held on 21 Jan with attendees from NED, CRO, ESP and GER.

ORC Regatta News:

FOX and INTERLODGE winners in Key West

After four days of windward/leeward course racing in light to moderate breezes, two class winners emerged at the second annual Southernmost Regatta held last week in Key West, Florida. Victor Wild’s TP52 FOX recovered from a tough first day of last place finishes to earn eventual victory in the GL52 Class by only one point over David Team’s TP52 VESPER.

Gwen Fragomen and her team on the custom Botin 44 INTERLODGE repeated their ORC class win earned in last year’s regatta, this time by a 4 point margin over Tom Sutton’s J/122 LEADING EDGE.

But this win was not easy: in 6 of 8 races sailed these two teams were trading 1-2 scores in a very diverse 7-boat class. Despite wide differences in boat types, the racing was close: using the 5-Band scoring system, in 5 of 8 races the winning boat's victory was by less than 1 minute after an hour of racing…in one race the margin was only by 3 seconds.
