EVANS WEEKLY
Issue: #39
May 29, 2020

Dear Panther Parents,

This is our final newsletter for the 2019-2020 school year.  We really do appreciate the teamwork that went into this year, especially this last quarter.  The majority of our students were working diligently each day and our teachers did an amazing job instructing virtually with such a limited amount of prep time.  Final grade will be posted in HAC June 1st.  Please email if you have any concerns about grades after you have viewed the final report card for 2019-2020 school year.

Reverse parade:  This was a huge success and we appreciate all of those who participated.  It was amazing to see all of those precious faces.  I expected the fun, but I didn't expect the emotions that bubbled up...sorry for those who saw me in tears.  It really was an awesome day!!

Laptop return: Many of our families were able to check-out laptops for this final quarter.  Please hold onto those for now.  MISD will have return procedures in place in August.  Students will basically turn-in laptops and receive their new 1:1 laptops which they will have throughout middle school and into high school.  More details to come later in the summer.

If you are moving over the summer, please contact our registrar, Paula Lough and let her know so she can assist you with withdrawal paperwork that you will need to register at your new school.  [email protected].

Pick-up/Drop-off:  Thanks to those who completed the Google Form regarding items still needing to be picked up or dropped off.  I will send out an email in the next week or so with some dates that I will be available for the leftover items to be picked up or returned.
Please click  HERE  to access the Google Form.

Let's have some fun!!  The link HERE will take you to a staff autograph project that you can print and attach into your child's yearbook or memory book as desired.  We had fun writing these notes to our students.

As always, please continue to check our website at www.evansms.com for the most up-to-date information.  We are also available to return calls and emails throughout the summer, so please don't hesitate to reach out.

Below is information from our yearbook:

Good news! Evans MS Yearbook signing IS NOT cancelled!
Evans Parents and Students:
Yearbook Signing: SOCIALLY DISTANCED EDITION

We are excited to announce that the Evans MS yearbook signing tradition is alive and it's fully digital to suit our socially distanced students.

Jostens has just launched a new platform, Yearbook Digital Signing Pages, that gives every student in our school the chance to create  virtual signing pages, invite their friends to leave messages, and print out the final pages to keep with the yearbook as a permanent keepsake. This is free for every student whether they purchased a yearbook or not.

Share the link below with your student or if they are under 13, please register their account for them so they can get started with the yearbook signing.

If you are connected on the Evans Yearbook Instagram Account it will also have instructions. IG: @evansmsyearbook

We Need Your Help!!!

Here are four ways you can help your PTO.   As you can see, we have made it much easier for you with step-by-step instructions.   It doesn't take long to follow these steps.  We greatly appreciate your help!

There's a new way to collect box tops which means no more cutting them out.  Checkout the video!

Box Tops New App: Scan for your School
Box Tops New App: Scan for your School

The newly updated way to collect Box Tops is so much easier.  So now you have no excuse not to collect box tops.  For more information, click  HERE .

It's easier than ever for you to make a difference at Evans! We have two new ways for you to support our school while you shop, without any extra cost to you.

Do you shop at Kroger? Evans Middle School PTO is now enrolled with Kroger's Community Rewards program. If you already have a Kroger Rewards Card, log in to your account at www.kroger.com and then click Enroll. You can search for Evans Middle School PTO or enter our code, AF012. New users will need to create an account, which requires some basic information, a valid email address, and a Rewards Card. You must have a registered Kroger Rewards Card account to link it to our school. If you don't have a card, they a
re available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. Then each time you shop at Kroger, swipe your card or use the phone number related to your card. Then PTO will take the proceeds to help our students and staff!

When you shop through Amazon Smile, Evans Middle School PTO will receive 0.5% of most purchases to fund programs, events, and grants at our school. To get started, designate Evans PTO as your charitable organization by going to https://smile.amazon.com/ch/57-1206927. Then every time you shop, start at smile.amazon.com and our school will benefit (at no cost to you!).
Please share these ways to support Evans Middle School with friends. Thanks for your support!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Well, we made it. Next week is the last couple of days of the 2019-2020 school year. Thanks for hanging in with us. We hope that you find rest and rejuvenation this summer. Who knows what is in store for next year. This week I attended a webinar on Hope, optimism and gratitude. It is so interesting, and yet not surprising, what those three things do for our emotional and physical health. We are hard-wired with 5 basic emotions (sadness, joy, disgust, anger, fear - think Inside Out movie), but humility, forgiveness, empathy, optimism, kindness, patience, gratitude, compassion are all skills learned. That means we can always get better. And, when we practice these skills, stress levels go down. Jenny Severson is the author of Thrive and was the moderator of the webinar ( https://jennyseverson.com/ ). It was fascinating stuff, check it out if you are interested. But, the basics is our brains are not multitaskers of emotions. It can certainly jump at a rapid pace from emotions, but it can't have two simultaneously. So, if we are practicing positive skills and emotions like hope and optimism, it's really hard to let depression, stress and anxiety dominate our life. What can you do? Jenny gave two very basic recommendations that came about while she was battling cancer.
  1. Every day her family shares a win, a low, a high. What did you do today that was a win, what was a low - and try to reframe, and then what was your high today.
  2. Everyone in the family has a feel good list. It's easy, just list out 5-10 things you do that make you feel good and when you don't feel good - go to your list. Number of items on the list should go up as we get older. Young elementary will have 3-4 and then on up. Keep them healthy and positive (read a book, draw a picture, go for a walk, take a bath, shoot hoops, talk to a friend, etc.)

Happy summer everyone. Stay healthy and safe. We can't wait to see your kids (and you)!

Check Out This eBook on Overdrive!

Timothy is a good kid who did a bad thing. Now he's under house arrest for a whole year. He has to check in weekly with a probation officer and a therapist, keep a journal, and stay out of trouble. But when he must take drastic measures to help his struggling family, staying out of trouble proves more difficult than Timothy ever thought it would be.

Touching, humorous, and always original, House Arrest is a funny book for teens in verse about a good boy's hard-won path to redemption. The ideal addition to any young adult book collection, House Arrest will delight reluctant readers and provides teenage motivation when it's needed most.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE

Please remember that incoming 7th graders next school year will need to begin the year with their immunizations up to date.  If you receive and email, it means we need updated records for your student.   Please update your immunizations as needed when the community closures and Governmental recommendations allow routine doctor visits.

We hope everyone has a wonderful summer break, and we are looking forward to seeing you in August!

Stay Safe and Healthy!
