| Everything Vlieseline – and embroidery inspirations – today in Henley-on-Thames | Come on, Vilene – learn from the Vlieseline experts | |
We're really excited this Saturday morning: today we have a very special open day here in Henley, with the experts from Vlieseline with us to explain and demonstrate everything you can do with the company's products. Vlieseline's head of UK sales Janet Kolle will be showing you how to use its numerous dressmaking tapes to give your projects a truly professional finish, while star quilter John Morgan-Cole is going to be be highlighting his favourite Vlieseline products, showing you bag-making, waterproofing (using Lamifix), and super-accurate piecing using Quilters Grid.
There'll be goodie bags (while stocks last), a raffle and demonstrations from 11am. Join us – it all starts at 10am and runs until 4pm, and best of all it's all free!
| Discover the art of embroidery | |
Also opening today, and running until Friday 29th September, is an exhibition of work by Reading Embroiderers.
For this show, every member was sent a piece of fabric and given carte blanche to stitch, the only condition being that each one's work was then circulated to three further members. The results were made into their Covid Quilt, which can be seen at this exhibition, and they all enjoyed it so much that they then went on to stitch the pennants that make up their branch bunting, also on show here at Lady Sew and Sew.
Members are joining us today, so if you want some stitch advice, or would like to become a Reading Embroiderer, come along and meet them today.

Try your hand at embroidery with our cute Anchor kits
If the exhibition inspires you to try your hand at embroidery, our kits are a great place to start. For example, this Tree of Life kit includes printed fabric, Anchor threads and full instructions. And if you need an embroidery hoop, we also sell those – and they're great for quilting, too!
| Keep your sewing-room tidy with this stylish caddy | |
Here's a classy way to keep your sewing-place tidy and free from clutter: this Craft Caddy is made from one of Kerrie Padmore's clever Living in Loveliness patterns, and is stabilised and shaped using Vlieseline's Style-Vil interfacing.
It has pockets inside and out for all your sewing accoutrements, and has many other uses too – it's perfect for all kinds of craft equipment, or as a dressing-table tidy to keep your toiletries in order. And best of all, you get to make it in your favourite fabrics!
| Snow way you'll be chilly, even on the coldest day, with these Lewis & Irene flannels | Here's a super-warm collection from Lewis & Irene – Snow Day is full of festive images for the run-up to Christmas, and the brushed cotton makes it ideal for cosy makes, from an autumn or winter gift, such as Christmas PJs for the whole family, just for snuggling up on the couch on a cold evening. It's available by the metre, or in a choice of four Fat Quarter packs. | |
Inspired by all this cosiness, designer Sally Ablett has created this cuddly Snow Day Flannel Quilt Kit, which is available in three colourways.
Created using simple strips, this quick and easy project makes up to 54x57in, and with the simple piecing and large shapes, you could put the whole top together in a weekend. The kit includes all the fabric to make the quilt top and binding, and comes with full instructions.

Winter in Bluebell Wood is another flannel collection from Lewis & Irene, the wonder of the deep forest animals and trees combining with the soft brushed cotton to warm fluffy projects for the colder seasons.
Make striking designs with these vibrant plain flannel fabrics, from seasonal shades to the clever blenders of the Bumbleberries flannel collection. This one is Hollyberry, from Tula Pink's Holiday Homies collection.
Take a darker look at Hallowe'en in Tim Holtz's Regions Beyond...
There's something rather disturbing about the aged American Gothic look of Tim Holtz's Regions Beyond collection – even its name has a sense of entering the unknown. So if you want an alternative to ghosts in white sheets with eye-holes, and sweet old ladies in pointy black hats this Hallowe'en, nowyou know where to look.
...Or mix up some magic with Tim's Alchemy collection...
|
Even Tim Holtz's blenders are somewhat out there: the Alchemy collection swirls with the magical process of transformation or creation, the vibrant movement of vivid hues designed to immerse the imagination into the wonderful world of colour.
Intrigued? We've put together a striking seven-piece Alchemy Fat Quarter pack to inject some magic into your quilting.

...And when it comes to backing fabrics, Tim Holtz has a plan
|
Reminding us of dusty, faded old documents found in a long-abandoned building, this New York Street Maps design is one of Tim Holtz's typically quirky takes on backing fabric.
And we've mapped out a way to save you lots of money on these fabrics: Tim's extra-wides are now just £15/m, reduced from £27.99/m.

Why not back your quilts with Squiggle, for a giggle
Just because you want your backing fabric to be neutral and abstract, not detracting from the quilt-top, there's nothing to stop it being fun, too. That's the idea behind the Squiggle extra-wide collection, which is always hugely popular with our customers. And that's why we've just had a fresh delivery, so we're now fully-stocked again. Time to get squiggling...
Brace yourself for the fresh sea air of Southwold, coming soon
|
There's a spot of synchronicity for you: no sooner do our Judy and mum Joy book a cottage for a week on the Suffolk coast next month, than we get this Southwold Blue collection by Sanderson ready for pre-order.
It's coming at the beginning of New Year, and is packed with eight evocative designs representing the beauty of the English countryside, all in a beautiful blue palette. Order yours now, by the metre or in precut packs – we think this one will be snapped up fast.

Odile Bailloeul's Murano is a real touch of glass | This is Marine Palazzio Grande, from Odile Bailloeul's forthcoming Murano collection, and all we can say is 'Wow!'
|
Like all the fabrics in the collection, it evokes the rich colours of the famous glass made on the island in the Venetian lagoon, blended with floral motifs to create dream-like jewellery.
Animals, unusual flowers, and tiles intermingle to create a luxurious baroque style, so if you like it – and we're sure you will – make sure you pre-order now. We're certain this one's going to be a runaway success.
Also included in this fabulous collection is this stunning Lorenzo Quilt Kit: designed by Odile herself, it invites you to the most beautiful Venetian palaces, where rare stone mosaics and clever geometry create exquisite decorations.
It's simply breathtaking!

One of the things we love about our sewing and knitting is that you never seem to run out of new things to try, from picking up a new skill to being inspired an unfamiliar fabric, or looking at a quilt and thinking 'Now, how did they do that?'
That's the thinking behind our arrangement with publisher Search Press, which brings you a 30% discount and free delivery on every one of its titles.
For example, if you're inspired by our Reading Embroiderers exhibition, you could read more about the techniques in The Embroidery Stitch Companion by Coline Bavois. Simply order it direct from Search Press, use the exclusive Lady Sew and Sew code DD01 at checkout, and this handy pocket guide will soon be on its way to you for just £6.99, delivered.
Meanwhile, what have we got coming up here at Lady Sew and Sew?
