ORM Update - August 2021
Message from the director
Welcome
On behalf of the Office of Risk Management, I'm pleased to welcome you back to campus!

One of my favorite parts of working at ISU is the opportunity to witness the amazing innovations being developed by our faculty, staff and students, and I'm proud that our unit can play a role in supporting those efforts. Our team takes pride in providing solutions and partnering with university community members to help achieve their project and institutional goals.

If you don't already know about the expertise and resources we offer, please check out our website or reach out to us.

Best wishes for a successful fall semester!
Susie Johnson, Director

Read on below for information about events and student organization travel authorization.
Events
Hundreds of events each year are registered and held on campus by student organizations, departments and third parties. By registering events through the University Event Authorization system, communication and coordination among campus partners improve, compliance with university policies and procedures is more consistent, and security and safety for university community members and visitors are enhanced.

What is an event and how do I get one authorized?

Visit the Events page to learn which events and activities must be authorized, and when additional approvals may be needed - for example, activities involving animals, alcohol service, fireworks/pyrotechnics, food sales, gambling, temporary structures/tents, or youth under 18.
By the numbers (2020-2021):

Over 1,600 student events were held.

Over 500 departmental and 3rd party events were registered.
SafeFood 101

Is your student organization planning to serve food at an ISU event? Each person who will prepare or serve food needs to complete SafeFood 101 training in Canvas before the event.
Student Organization Travel
Many student organization activities involve local or interstate travel for conferences, competitions, to transport equipment or materials, etc. This travel is governed by the Student Organization Travel policy and procedures for use of university vehicles. Organizations must designate a trip coordinator to submit a travel authorization request through the Student Organization Travel Authorization system (SOTA), and all members who wish to drive must complete driving training (including additional training for large passenger vans or trailer towing). Visit the Student Organization Travel page for more information or to submit a new trip.
By the numbers:

About 500 student organization trips are made annually, with 2,600+ student travelers.

800 students have completed driver training since January 2020.
Spotlight on:
Kurt Beyer
Kurt came to ISU in the fall of 2000 as a undergraduate, graduating in 2004 with a double major in Agronomy and Agricultural Systems Technology. He received his M.S. in College Student Personnel at Miami University in Ohio.
He returned to ISU in 2007 as the assistant director for student programs and student alumni leadership council advisor with the ISU Alumni Association. He has been with ORM since 2015 , currently serving as senior risk and systems analyst and interim sport club safety officer.

My role:

I have a pretty varied job in the Office of Risk Management, where I go from reviewing student organization events and travel, to answering questions about departmental and third-party events taking place on campus, to implementing a new addition to the ISU incident reporting system. My conversations with colleagues can include who is approved to drive an ISU vehicle, what kind of participant agreement is needed for a campus sports tournament, and how ISU manages data regarding someone who is injured on campus.

What I like best about working for ORM and ISU:

I'm a lifelong Iowa State fan, and I'm certain that ISU is one of the best universities in the country. Our students are some of the most highly motivated and achieving collegians in the country, and I'm always impressed by what our ISU community accomplishes on daily basis.

Working in Risk Management is always entertaining, engaging, and surprising! I love working with the ISU community to help our students, faculty, and staff accomplish their goals.

Fun facts about me:

  • I'm a life-long farm kid, and get back to help as much as possible in the fall and spring.

  • I'm the biggest Star Trek fan that you know as well!
