ORM at URMIA
Members of the Department of Public Safety and ORM team recently attended the annual University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) conference. Team members participated in educational sessions on enterprise risk management (ERM), youth protection, insurance solutions, and other emerging risk management topics. ORM director Susie Johnson co-presented a session with Tim Reuter, service learning and student organizations coordinator in Student Engagement, to demonstrate and discuss the development of Iowa State's University Event Authorization system.

URMIA is a valued resource for higher education risk managers, providing education and resources to an international community of almost 2,700 members, including practicing professionals at more than 550 institutions of higher learning.

Risk Management 101
What is Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)?

ERM is a holistic, systematic approach to address risks (both threats and opportunities) across an organization, or enterprise. Unlike traditional risk management, which primarily focuses on hazard risks related to health, safety and insurable losses such as flood or property damage, ERM considers the full range of potential risks, including reputational, operational, compliance and strategic risks. An effective ERM program promotes a risk-aware culture and enables an institution to identify and respond to emerging risks before they become crises.

As subject matter experts, risk owners identify and assess risks at the local level, and the coordinated rating and reporting structure within an ERM program promotes reliable monitoring and communication across divisions and units. This coordinated approach produces an institution-wide portrait of risks and provides decision-makers with key information to better prioritize resources and make informed decisions related to strategic planning.

Spotlight on:
Beeta Siwik
Beeta recently joined the ORM team as youth and volunteer programs coordinator. She has a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Minnesota, and previously managed the volunteer program for the Baltimore office of the country’s largest refugee resettlement non-profit. Beeta has fascinating stories from her life teaching and overseeing college students on political campaigns across the country.

My role:

I connect volunteers and youth to university policies. I build that connection with our data system, staff collaboration, and trainings. I support program safety and coordination for our campus community.

What I like best about working for ORM and ISU:

I enjoy working with thoughtful people who are dedicated to ISU! Working for ISU, I love being a resource for the engagement of many. Being involved mattered for me and I hope my work helps make it more accessible for anybody to get and stay involved.
