ORTIi News & Updates
David Putnam

Greetings from Oregon Response to Instruction and Intervention

Changes at ORTIi

Long time ORTIi director Dr. David Putnam is retiring at the end of June. It is impossible to determine the exact number of students and educators David has positively impacted during his time with ORTIi. He has been the director for 11 years, during which the project has served 6 Elementary Literacy Cadres, 2 Middle School Literacy Cadres and one Elementary Math cadre. Prior to becoming the director, he also supported RTI implementation in two other cadres. This adds up to over 100 school districts in Oregon. Through outreach and collaboration with a wide range of entities, David has supported RTI implementation across the country and internationally. Our team will miss his daily doses of encouragement, wisdom and humor that help make this a great place to work, but we wish him all the best fishing days in his retirement.

While a change in leadership in some organizations can cause uncertainty and anxiety, we are thrilled to announce that ORTii Implementation Coach Brad Thorud is stepping into the director role (well, let’s be honest – because it is Brad, he is leaping enthusiastically into the role). Our work continues!

word cloud
Above is the word cloud attendees created from the words to the Preamble to the Science of Reading: A Defining Movement during the opening to our Science of Reading Day on April 28th. As you can see, this preamble definitely gave us all a "why" for the day of deep learning about reading.

ORTII has just released the Resource Bank from the Individualizing and Intensifying Supports through Equitable, Inclusive, and Evidence-Based Practices webinar series (2020-21). The resource bank is the full collection of resources shared over the course of the series, and includes a variety of articles, books, online courses, webinars, and websites on topics such as effective instruction, equity and inclusion, data-based individualized supports, virtual literacy instruction and assessment, behavior and SEL, collaborative teaming, and more!

You've attended the Science of Reading Conference Day. Now what?
(Audience: Elementary Teachers and Principals)

If you found yourself thinking "I should learn more about just what the Science of Reading means for the instructional practices in my classroom or my building", here is a FREE course from Reading Rockets. Click here for more information. There are 9 modules that cover reading, writing and assessment. Each module has a pretest, content (including sample lessons and videos), an assignment, and a post test.

How could you use this course in your setting?
  • As a grade level team, so you could discuss the implications of each lesson on how and what you teach in your setting.
  • As an individual or group of elementary principals so you could reflect on the implications for literacy instruction in your building(s).
  • As training for Instructional Assistants who support reading instruction.
  • As a resource for parents, caregivers and other community members interested in reading instruction.

Instruction Matters
Audience: All

We were grateful Dr. Anita Archer was able to join us to present the final wrap-up keynote for our Annual Conference Series. Dr. Archer shared her thoughts about what will require our "tenacious attention" this spring and into next year: strong instruction, a focus on critical content, filling in gaps, and accelerating learning. She also talked about ways to "polish" the high leverage instructional practices many of us have been working on for a few years. To view Dr. Archer's endnote and to find the presentation slides, click here and scroll to the bottom of the digital program.
Differentiated Small Group Instruction During Core
(Audience: Elementary Teachers)

Here is another useful resource from Stephanie Stoller's Reading Science Academy. You can use your spring screening assessment data to create groups to continue with targeted skill group instruction through the spring and/or even use it for possible summer school reading instruction. Schools can also ensure the information about skill needs get passed on to the next grade so that teachers can begin skill group instruction even before the fall data is available (knowing that some students may not exactly fit the group after the summer).
