DRAWING TOGETHER

This Fall we’re gathering in person and online to offer one another support, encouragement and challenge. And we’re paying attention to God’s ingenious designs for our lives, our work together, our community - we’re being drawn into the new, beautiful things that God is up to. But we’re also drawing the future together: dreaming about who we might become, what’s next, and how we might build a church that’ll be ready for what’s coming next. It’s an exciting season, a transforming liminal time, a time of co-creating. The Gospel of Luke will be our companion - with stories about preparation and surprise, perseverance and restoration.

GET INVOLVED

OLD SOUTH FORUM

10:00 a.m., 2nd Floor Mary Norton Hall and Zoom

September 25th - Progressive Christian Evangelism: Out in the World

If the word "evangelism" sends a shiver down your spine - this Forum is for you! What does Progressive Christian Evangelism look like? How do we share the Good News about what's happening in church and in our lives in a positive way? We'll work on this, and draw attention to the skills and assets we already have for helping connect others to our faith community.

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY

Sundays at 10 am in the Phillis Wheatley Room and via zoom

Delve into the day’s scripture passage heard in worship. This no-homework Bible study delights in taking a scholarly look at ancient texts. Don’t leave your questions at the door; we need them. For more information contact Katherine Schofield.

SMALL GROUP

Some small groups read books, others go out to movies, meals, or the museum. Email Katherine Schofield to find out more about the Small Groups Old South has to offer.

MAKE MUSIC!

We have two choral ensembles: Festival Choir (weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings weekly performances on Sundays at 11am). Contact Mitchell Crawford. Our Gospel Choir rehearses and performs once a month. Contact Tim Harbold. The Old South Ringers have room at the bell tables and rehearse weekly on Tuesdays and perform in worship once a month. Contact Peter Coulombe.

WORSHIP ON YOUTUBE LIVE

Not a fan of Vimeo? We have a way for you to tune in to worship! Simply go to youtube.com/OldSouthChurch to visit our YouTube page once we go live and the service will be the first video on your screen. You can also subscribe to us to receive notifications of when we're live.

JAZZ WORSHIP

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m., in the Gordon Chapel or at oldsouth.org/jazz

Join us on in Gordon Chapel on Thursday evening for Jazz Worship! You don’t have to be a jazz aficionado to feel at home - just someone who wants to immerse yourself in soulful music, inspiring words, and creative liturgy. It’s intimate and it’s welcoming. We start preludes shortly before 6:00 pm. Click here if you’d like a hard copy of the song titles, credits, and hymns to print in advance.

PASTORAL TRANSITION

UPDATE FROM THE SENIOR MINISTER SEARCH COMMITTEE

After releasing the profile and launching our strategy for active outreach at the end of September, we look forward to receiving applications. Though we will review applications on a rolling basis, we want to ensure that we have recruited a diverse pool of candidates before we begin interviewing. We will communicate to potential applicants our intent to solicit applications through the end of November, though we won’t officially “close the door” on new candidates until we have found our new Senior Minister. Out of respect for the Advent and Christmas season and the demands on ministers’ time during the month of December, we anticipate beginning our interviews in January.  Click here to read the most recent update.

SEARCH FOR A NEW ASSOCIATE MINISTER

With Council's approval in hand, the Profile has been posted in the UCC call system - and we've just begun hearing from candidates. Some of the best recruiting happens by word-of-mouth - so if you know anyone who should apply (or know anyone who might be in a position to encourage good candidates to apply), please feel free to refer them to the Old South website - where the Profile is now also posted, along with instructions for submitting materials. Click here to read more!

Our saints include Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, Phillis Wheatley... and maybe you! Want to learn more about the life of this community of faith and break bread with other newcomers and church members?

Join our Connections Info Session! Contact Rev. Katherine Schofield for more info.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

October 2nd

For this year’s celebration of World Communion Sunday on October 2nd, Old South welcomes special guest Jorge Lockward to lead us in worship. A native of the Dominican Republic, Jorge currently lives in New York City where he works as Director of the Global Praise Program of the General Board of Global Ministries for The United Methodist Church, and lectures on worship at Union Theological Seminary. Through word, music, and in prayers and liturgy drawn from across the globe, Jorge will help us broaden our concept of World Communion Sunday to Communion with all that is — making the connection to the Christian construct of the Holy Trinity. Please join us for an incredible morning of worship!

NEIGHBORS IN NEED COLLECTION

Sunday, October 2nd

Next Sunday our collection will be in support of Neighbors in Need (NIN), a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to UCC churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. Here are the ways that you can give to this cause:

  • Use the envelope included in the bulletin

20's AND 30's AFTER JAZZ DINNER

First Thursdays: Oct 6, Nov 3, Dec 1 following Jazz Worship

Join us for a casual young adult gathering following Jazz Worship on the first Thursday of the month. Meet in the chapel, get dinner in the area (let us know if money is a barrier), and break bread together in the 4th floor Tower Room! Newcomers and old friends welcome -- no monthly commitment required. Email Sarah Cowles or Abigail Smith with any questions.

I Will Lift My Eyes Unto the Mountains: A Musical Exploration of the Psalms

Saturday, Oct. 22, 2pm, Guild Room

Experience the psalms in a unique and memorable way! Join OSC member Del Case, Professor of Music at Wheaton College, for a unique event that uses live musical performances as a springboard for discussion about Scripture and faith. Participants gather to hear world-premiere performances of brand-new musical compositions inspired by the psalms, then join each other in conversation about the ways these pieces help foster experience and understand the BIble. No musical experience is necessary!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Happy birthday to all our members and friends born in September. Join us in the Gordon Chapel after Festival Worship for cake and singing.

These simple meals are designed around Bible references so may involve meat and dairy, but we will do what we can to accommodate different dietary requirements. This initial pilot of Spice Up The Bible is limited to 12 participants who commit to all four sessions. Sessions will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays at Old South Church (in person) October 12th, 19th, and 26th. The final session (in person) will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4th.
