DRAWING TOGETHER

We’re gathering in person and online to offer one another support, encouragement and challenge. And we’re paying attention to God’s ingenious designs for our lives, our work together, our community - we’re being drawn into the new, beautiful things that God is up to. But we’re also drawing the future together: dreaming about who we might become, what’s next, and how we might build a church that’ll be ready for what’s coming next. It’s an exciting season, a transforming liminal time, a time of co-creating. The Gospel of Luke will be our companion - with stories about preparation and surprise, perseverance and restoration.

THIS WEEK'S FORUM

10:00 a.m., 2nd Floor Mary Norton Hall and Zoom

  • September 18th - Progressive Christian Hospitality: Extravagant Welcome We pride ourselves on being the Church of the Open Door, but what happens once a newcomer walks through? Do you feel like your hospitality (erm - social) skills are a bit rusty? We'll look at the tools we have to help visitors (and each other) feel even more at home at Old South. And we'll practice by - gasp - actually talking to each other! Newcomers are especially welcome.

WORSHIP ON YOUTUBE LIVE

Not a fan of Vimeo? We have a way for you to tune in to worship! Simply go to youtube.com/OldSouthChurch to visit our YouTube page once we go live and the service will be the first video on your screen. You can also subscribe to us to receive notifications of when we're live.

JAZZ WORSHIP

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m., in the Gordon Chapel or at oldsouth.org/jazz

Join us on in Gordon Chapel on Thursday evening for Jazz Worship! You don’t have to be a jazz aficionado to feel at home - just someone who wants to immerse yourself in soulful music, inspiring words, and creative liturgy. It’s intimate and it’s welcoming. We start preludes shortly before 6:00 pm. Click here if you’d like a hard copy of the song titles, credits, and hymns to print in advance.

PASTORAL TRANSITION

UPDATE FROM THE SENIOR MINISTER SEARCH COMMITTEE

After releasing the profile and launching our strategy for active outreach at the end of September, we look forward to receiving applications. Though we will review applications on a rolling basis, we want to ensure that we have recruited a diverse pool of candidates before we begin interviewing. We will communicate to potential applicants our intent to solicit applications through the end of November, though we won’t officially “close the door” on new candidates until we have found our new Senior Minister. Out of respect for the Advent and Christmas season and the demands on ministers’ time during the month of December, we anticipate beginning our interviews in January.  Click here to read the most recent update.

SEARCH FOR A NEW ASSOCIATE MINISTER

With Council's approval in hand, the Profile has been posted in the UCC call system - and we've just begun hearing from candidates. Some of the best recruiting happens by word-of-mouth - so if you know anyone who should apply (or know anyone who might be in a position to encourage good candidates to apply), please feel free to refer them to the Old South website - where the Profile is now also posted, along with instructions for submitting materials. Click here to read more!

GROWING AND LIVING IN COMMUNITY

THE THEOLOGICAL BOOK GROUP

Contact Don Wells ASAP to sign up, Limited to 20 participants

begins Monday, September 26th at 6 p.m., Zoom link will be sent to participants

Our new book for the Fall is Grateful: the Subversive Practice of Giving Thanks, by Diana Butler Bass (paperback). The book deals with 'gratitude', which we all feel is good, but our private feelings often seem disconnected with the larger concerns of our public lives. Bass, an award winning author and public theologian, takes on this 'gratitude gap' and helps us see the transformative and even subversive power in practicing gratitude.

SPICE UP THE BIBLE!

These simple meals are designed around Bible references so may involve meat and dairy, but we will do what we can to accommodate different dietary requirements. This initial pilot of Spice Up The Bible is limited to 12 participants who commit to all four sessions. Sessions will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays at Old South Church (in person) October 12th, 19th, and 26th. The final session (in person) will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4th. (Facilitated by Priscilla Geigis, Kristi Geary, and Theologian in the Kitchen June Cooper) There is no cost to participate and ingredients will be provided.
