JOHN EDGERTON CHOSEN AS SENIOR MINISTER CANDIDATE

Click here to read the full announcement brochure

Rev. John Edgerton is well-known to Old South Church in Boston, having served as our Associate Minister from 2012-2019. Since then, John went on to serve as the Senior Minister for First United Church of Oak Park, Illinois. John is a graduate of St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and of the University of Chicago Divinity School. Much of John’s focus in ministry has been on the way Christians live their faith outside the walls of the church. John has a history of leadership in the national UCC, supporting churches to take prophetic action against racism and for LGBTQ inclusion. John loves all things food-related and spends much of his free time planning menus and cooking for his wife, Heather, and their daughter, Veronica.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

In accord with Article IX.B of the By-laws of Old South Church in Boston, a Special Meeting of the Congregation of Old South Church is hereby called for June 25th, for the purpose of hearing the report of the Senior Minister Search Committee and voting on their chosen candidate to be the 21st Senior Minister of Old South Church. The meeting will be called to order at approx. 11 a.m., following the conclusion of the 10 a.m. service of worship, at which the candidate will preach.

At tinyurl.com/OSCCandidateMeeting is the Zoom link to allow those unable to be present in person to hear the meeting. Full members of the congregation will be able to vote.

SUMMER WORSHIP HOURS

For a 354 year old church we can be surprisingly nimble at times, responding to the needs of the moment, following the beckoning of the Spirit. Old South, we are asking you to practice a spry spirituality as we approach the summer with a new worship schedule. Get excited for All-Church Worship, all summer long!

This summer we will worship together, strengthening our ties and joining our voices in the beautiful harmony of a diverse faith community whose hearts lean together. All services through the rest of the summer will be at 10am!

Childcare hours this summer are 8:50 - 11:45 - so you can sing in summer choir or just grab a cup of coffee with a friend.

July and August in the Chapel

Inspired by the words of William Carlos Williams - “In summer, the song sings itself” - our summer sermon series will focus on the sacred in the arts, particularly the artistic offerings of this amazing city. All-Church Worship will be in the Chapel at 10am for July and August (yay air conditioning!) and will include communion each week. And don't forget our amazing Summer Choir, which anyone can join for rehearsal at 9am. Following worship we will have coffee hour on the front porch, where we can enjoy one another's company and the beautiful summer weather.

JOIN THE MARY NORTON SOCIETY

Every one of us, no matter our age or financial circumstances, needs a plan for what will happen to our resources after we pass on. Many members and friends of Old South have included the church in their estate plans - "a way to support Old South from heaven." Here's how 5-year member Rebecca Bowen explains the plans she and husband Toby Bottorf have made:

My husband and I joined OSC in 2018. Neither of us grew up in the UCC so the practices and traditions are new to us ... and we find them powerfully moving as practiced by OSC. Every single time that the officiant offers Communion with the words 'at supper that evening there was one who would betray him ... if he would eat with them he would surely eat with us' we are reminded that Christ himself was radically inclusive. We express our enormous gratitude for OSC's interpretation of His ministry by including OSC in our estate plans. We hope that in doing so we help to equip future leaders to practice radical inclusion in the context of their day.

Those who provide for Old South in their estate plans become members of the Mary Norton Society. Won't you join them, as a way of insuring that the things that have mattered most to you will be here for coming generations? Contact [email protected] for more information.
