PHILLIS WHEATLEY SUNDAY
Sunday, May 8th
Join us as we celebrate this extraordinary young woman (who was baptized into the church on August 18, 1771). With us on May 8th will be a film crew who are making an IMAX documentary for the Museum of Science - a film celebrating New England! They will be featuring a member of our congregation: Dr. Paula Hammond of MIT, who will be the voice of science, education and innovation in New England. One of the angles of innovation that interests them is the idea of social innovation - the history of revolutionaries who refused to accept the way things were and challenged New England society through their words and actions. In that vein, they are interested in capturing film on you and about our Phillis Wheatley Sunday.

The Rev Dr Emmett Price III, Dean of Africana Studies at Berklee College of Music, will grace us with dynamic preaching (sermon title: The Faith of Our Mothers) and both he and our own June Cooper will be presented with Old South Church's Open Door Award.

Don your Sunday best, come to church and join us as we promenade to the Boston Women's Memorial to fete Phillis Wheatley on the occasion of her birthday.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
At Old South Church in Boston, by contrast, we practice Open Communion. (Closed Communion and Open Communion are actual ecclesiastical terms. You can look them up on Wikipedia.) We practice Open Communion at Old South Church because, as it turns out, Jesus was sloppy, extravagant, and calculatingly generous with his invitations to the table: to the meals, suppers, and picnics he was forever planning and hosting."

Watch the video to to hear
Senior Minister Nancy S. Taylor
preach a sermon titled Open.
