YOUTH SUNDAY, June 4th

On Sunday June 4th, the last day of our regular program year, Old South's Youth Group will lead worship services at both First Worship and Festival Worship. Come and join us as we experience services our teens have crafted, centering around the dilemma of homelessness, including a sermon from high school junior Quinn Grant. CONNECTIONS LUNCHEON

Following Festival Worship this Sunday, June 4th, in the 4th Floor Guild Room

To be a member of Old South Church is to enter the company of Revolutionary Era heroes, abolitionists, suffragettes, anti-poverty crusaders, and poets. Our saints include Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, Phillis Wheatley... and maybe you! Want to learn more about the life of this community of faith and break bread with other newcomers and church members? Join our Connections Info Session! Contact Katherine Schofield for more info.

PASTORAL SEARCH COMMITTEE NEWS: Candidate Chosen

The Pastoral Search Committee has reached a unanimous decision about the candidate God is calling to serve as the 21st Senior Minister of Old South Church. Our discussions were rich and complex and prayerful – joyful and hopeful to be sure but also personal and humbling and at times painful. Through the process, we came to know and understand one another and the church we love more deeply. We believe we have heard God’s voice in one another and we are thrilled to be ready to present our recommendation to the Church Council on June 13th. Following the deliberation and discernment of the Church Council, we anticipate introducing the candidate to the church. The candidate will preach at a Sunday service – hopefully in late June! The service will be followed by a congregational meeting in which we will do what Congregationalists do – discuss and vote to call a new Senior Minister.

June 17th, 8:45am - 4pm (lunch provided)

All Ages | Free (donations accepted)

Click here to register by June 11th

What are monuments for? Whose stories do they hold up for celebration? Whose stories do they erase or bury?

  • In our first workshop of the day, led by Wee The People Boston's Francie LaTour, we explore statues and monuments (famous and not so famous), question what they mean, and reimagine how they can celebrate values of community, equity, and justice. Hands-on making for all ages!
  • Our day continues with a second workshop for adults focusing on monuments and representation at Old South, led by Old South pastors and leaders, along with our guest. Children will have their own afternoon activities with Children's Ministries staff.

VOLUNTEER WITH OUR PARTNERS:

MATTAPAN FOOD AND FITNESS COALITION

Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition is one of our Christian Service and Outreach Grantees. In addition to their amazing work advocating for community health, they operate the Mattapan Square Farmer's Market. Helping with the Farmer's Market is one of the ways that Old Southers can volunteer and make a difference in partnership with this great organization. The market runs on Saturdays from July to October and typically sees 200-400 shoppers per week. It is not only a place to purchase healthy food, but also serves as a place to bring residents together and as a resource for health education and other social issues. The market's 17th season starts July 8, 2023 and ends October 28, 2023. There are lots of ways to help.

GREEN TIP: USE NATURAL LIGHT

Using natural light helps to decrease the need to use artificial lights in your home – saving energy in the long run. Research also suggests natural light boosts Vitamin D, decreases seasonal depression, improves sleep, and improves health.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

"The little red badge of courage - keep it in your memory. It recalls the ones whose way of confirming his presence was actually, finally, God bless them, to leave the room and take to the streets."

Watch the video to hear Interim Senior Minister Rick Spalding reflect on The Red Badge.
