CHILDREN’S SABBATH

Sunday, October 20, at First and Festival Worship

Children's Sabbath celebrates the spiritual leadership of our kids, emphasizing their role in guiding us in meaningful ways today, not just in the future. On this special day, the children of Old South provide hospitality as ushers, as well as lead us through worship in song and word.

USHER TRAINING

Festival Worship on October 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Curious about those friendly folks who offer you a smile and a bulletin at worship? These are our ushers. Ushers offer a warm welcome and Christian hospitality to all those who worship with us. You don't need a formal role to be an usher at Old South. If you're interested in learning more about ushering and being on OSC's front lines of friendliness, attend an Usher Training. Join our team! YOGA & MEDITATION THIS SUNDAY

Sundays at 10am in the basement Club Room

Old South is a gentle space to nourish our spiritual body, but sometimes it's the physical body crying out or subtly seeking our attention. You are invited to join a weekly yoga and meditation small group during the 10 o’clock hour (between the 9 and 11am services) in the Club Room. Please bring a journal and a mat (or just let us know if you need either or both provided) to this time for breath, movement, and fellowship. We look forward to welcoming you. Questions? Old South's New Neighbor Task Force is supporting Circle of Hope by preparing Emergency Clothing Kits to be distributed to immigrant families experiencing housing insecurity. We are asking for donations of NEW gender-neutral socks, underwear, t-shirts, sweatpants, and sweatshirts.

OLD SOUTH FORUM - Sundays at 10am

Our next few sessions of The Forum will focus on the real history of Indigenous folks in this area, and grappling with uncomfortable truths about our church and nation's history.

Oct 20: The Church was Complicit - Our Missing Century”

Take a brief walk with member Marie Hurd through the time period from 1630 to 1775 in Mass Bay Colony and consider the role of religion and the church in the genocide of the indigenous peoples.  

Oct 27: Colonization & the Wampanoag Story - an overview!

Join church historian Kate Silfen in a large scale look at the time period and issues raised in our Family Book Study Colonization and the Wampanoag Story by Linda Coombs (Aquinnah Wampanoag). We'll think about how history is taught, and what parts are left out or reframed. You do not need to have read the book, this will be an entry level discussion for all.

Nov 3: What were the Residential Schools?

We continue looking at our Indigenous people's history with this very basic overview with Kate Nintcheu of what residential schools were - and how the US government and churches were complicit in this cultural erasure movement.

Sunday, October 27, 6pm - Costumes encouraged!

Join us for the return of Scared for Good! Old South Organist MitcHELL-FIRE Crawford and a host of demonic associates will thrill you with spine-tingling sounds of the season, courtesy of our room-rattling Skinner organ. Presented in partnership with the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, we’ll collect an offering to support programing for the youngest members of the chapter in memory of Old South’s beloved former Minister of Music, (Horrific!) Harry Huff.

Old South families (and interested adults) are already reading indigenous author Linda Coombs' young readers book: Colonization and the Wampanoag Story, a duet of stories -- one, a first-person account of a young Wampanoag child and what her life, education, and faith looked like -- and the other the story of the 'English' arriving and colonizing the area. These two veins of storytelling alternate back and forth, presenting the very different mindsets of the Wampanoag and other indigenous tribes and the arriving colonizers.

GREEN TIP: Reusable and Sustainable Halloween Decorations

Halloween costumes are often made of synthetic materials and are rarely reused, leading to a lot of unnecessary waste. This year, try creating a costume from clothes you already have or by upcycling old outfits. With some creativity, you can turn everyday items into a fun and unique costume. Got an old white sheet? It’s an instant ghost! Have a broken umbrella? Turn it into bat wings! Or, try making a scarecrow costume from flannel shirts and old jeans, or repurpose cardboard boxes to become a futuristic robot. Going the extra mile will be really rewarding, especially when you get lots of compliments on your creativity! For kids’ costumes, consider organizing a costume swap with friends or neighbors. Swapping costumes helps everyone save money and keeps costumes out of the landfill. Plus, it adds an element of surprise and creativity to the holiday! Looking for more eco-friendly costume ideas? Thursday Night Church is a worship service where the music is contemporary, the space is open-hearted and in-the-round, and the preaching is focused on how we can be the church together in the world.

After worship, join us for Thursday Night Supper Club. Each week, folks can gather after worship for dinner and an informal small group hosted by some of our friendly and hospitable lay leaders.

MASKED SECTIONS OF THE SANCTUARY AND CHAPEL

Did you know that we have masked sections in the Sanctuary and Chapel?

We do! It's in the left transept (under the balcony) of the Sanctuary. In the Gordon Chapel, the Columbarium is the designated section. In both sections, masks are required. If you still aren't sure how to get to either section, ask an usher!

Our Sanctuary in this City is open to visitors for prayer and reflection.

Monday-Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Fridays 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.;

and Weekends, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
