NEWS FROM OUR SAVIOR'S CHURCH

Has there ever been a time in your life in which things snuck up on you? How often do we know something (event, birthday, meeting, trip, etc.) is on the horizon and then suddenly it is right in front of us. This morning, I was very relaxed after my morning exercise, walking and getting ready for the day. There was about an hour before I needed to leave for church. I walked into my garden and harvested some arugula and started pulling a few weeds. The ground was still moist from the rain, and the weeds came up so easily. I could have continued pulling the weeds; however, I knew there were other tasks to complete. I stopped and noticed the raspberries growing and one very small strawberry. Making my way back inside, I went to my computer to complete a task I have been putting off. It took longer than I anticipated.

Then suddenly, I noticed it was past the time I had intended to leave for church. After all, I had a 10:00 a.m. Care and Comfort Team meeting. There was traffic that slowed my progress. Arriving ten minutes before the meeting, I was able to get set up in time. As folks came in, I was alerted that the meeting was not on the calendar. Funny thing is, I was proud of putting it on the church calendar, only to realize it was my church calendar not the master church calendar. As we set the next meeting, I was intentional in adding it to the master church calendar.

Communication is crucial and so is making space and time for the things that need to be accomplished. Initially, I had offered to host watching the Oregon Synod Assembly worship service at church on Saturday. With low response that folks would be coming to church to watch the service together and allowing more time to set up for a memorial service that afternoon, I have cancelled watching the service at church. I strongly encourage you to make the time to attend/watch it online in the comfort of your own home. Below is an invitation from Bishop Laurie.

When we make space for the unexpected aspects of life to happen, we are better able to approach the snafus and kerfuffle’s that inevitably happen upon our day. We are not called to perfection. We are called to community and collaboration, which is seasoned with a whole lot of grace and kindness. As Paul finishes his second letter to the church in Corinth, he reminds them/us. “11Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. 13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” (2 Corinthians 13:11-13).

THE NEXT 90 DAYS: ANTI-RACISM

In lieu of Mother’s Day, we finished our See Me, Believe Me book study on Tuesday on Zoom. One question posed by the Rev. Dr. Yolande Denson-Byers in the last study asked us to name one specific, achievable step we can take (individually) in the next 90 days to deepen our anti-racism work. Another question asked for one step that supports accountability and growth in anti-racism work.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

On behalf of the “Care Team”, thanks to all who participated in the greeting cardmaking session that was held Saturday, May 17th. We had a great time creating together and look Forward to holding another session in the future. A special thanks to Becky Brown for donating so much beautiful paper to Our Savior’s for the Care Team’s Card project. It was a treat to have such wonderful supplies to play with. We created several different styles of beginner friendly cards to take home, along with three-dimensional butterfly cards for our final project. There were even a few card kits to work on at home.

Thanks again and blessings to you all,

Thank you for the generous donations to the food pantry at Hunger Fighters. We delivered 62 lbs. of food this week including 12 1/2 gallons of milk. The news from H.F. is encouraging They have more partners for donations and now the big news is that Walmart is bringing a delivery of meat every week-which means all recipients are able to have meat at their visit to the food pantry. This is what they are asking of OSLC-that, if possible, we concentrate our donations on personal items especially shampoo, deodorant, and toilet paper.

Since the focus for Hunger Fighters is on personal items, now is a great time to help restock our food cupboard! Thank you to those who brought items in for the 24/7 Food Cupboard during this week. The need to feed our neighbors remains strong! Please continue to bring the brown bags of food. There are extra bags in the Narthex.

BONHOFFER STUDY

What does it mean to be Christian — not just in belief, but in practice — in a complicated world? We’re inviting you into a thoughtful and hopeful journey through the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer in a live Zoom study led by Dr. Craig Nessan.

Each session includes teaching, conversation in small groups, and shared reflection. You don’t need to be an expert, and you don’t need perfect attendance — just curiosity and a willingness to listen and learn together. If you’ve been longing for deeper faith, wiser conversation, and hopeful Christian community in anxious times — this is a beautiful place to begin. Individuals, couples, and groups welcome

This study explores two essential rhythms of Christian life Soul Care and Mutual Care. Only when both are alive, Bonhoeffer argued, are we prepared to serve neighbors — especially those most vulnerable — and to recognize Christ among them.

Sundays at 4:00 pm (75 minutes)
