OSSINING WEEKLY WEB BLAST June 18, 2020
Village & Town Information
The Village of Ossining is committed to share up-to-date and relative information regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic. In our weekly web blasts you will find this section dedicated to new information. For previously shared information, please visit the Village of Ossining's dedicated Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) page.
Helpful Information from New York State
Following a spike in domestic violence cases, Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa issued a report outlining the COVID-19 Domestic Violence Task Force's initial recommendations to reimagine New York's approach to services for domestic violence survivors. The recommendations, which Governor Cuomo has accepted, call for overhauling and reimagining a 40-year-old system to meet survivors where they are and to empower them to have the maximum control of their future. Read the full report by the task force here.

The news is still good regarding testing. Yesterday, we tested an extraordinary 72,395 New Yorkers for COVID. Of those tested, only 822 people were positive — or 1.1% of the total. This is great news: Even as New York has increased testing over the past few weeks, the number and percentage of positive results has stayed extremely low.
The deadline for the special enrollment period for health insurance is Monday, June 15th. New Yorkers who lost their health insurance this year can apply for a health plan through the NY State of Health Marketplace.

The 3.6-mile bicycle and pedestrian path on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge opened this week. The path provides a new connection for families, runners, cyclists, walkers and commuters to travel across the Hudson River. The path is officially open to the public as of today with safety protocols in place. Learn more here.

Low-risk youth sports for regions in Phase 3 of reopening can begin on July 6th. Sports to resume include baseball, softball, gymnastics, field hockey, cross country and crew with up to two spectators allowed per child.
The state is extending the special enrollment period for an additional 30 days through July 15, 2020. New Yorkers without health insurance can apply for a health plan through the  NY State of Health Marketplace.

Hospitals and group homes will be allowed to accept visitors at their discretion. Any facility that chooses to allow visitors must follow state guidelines, including time-limited visits and requiring visitors to wear PPE and be subject to symptom and temperature checks. Details here.

Take a look inside New York's effort to reimagine services for survivors of domestic violence. Amid an uptick in reports of domestic violence during the Coronavirus pandemic, New York is turning toward innovative strategies to rethink a 40-year-old system that will put the individual needs of survivors first.

On Wednesday, Governor CuomoI issued an Executive Order recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday for state employees. Juneteenth marks the day that enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they had been freed, over two years after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. In addition to this Executive Order, I will advance legislation to make this important day celebrating freedom an official state holiday next year.

The State Department of Health will allow midwife-led birthing centers in New York for the first time. This directive to diversify birthing site options and support patient choice was one of the six key recommendations of the COVID-19 Maternity Task Force launched in April.
Volunteer New York’s program to connect small business owners to trained volunteer professionals who can provide PPP help is now back online. Unlike other opportunities on their website, this one is specifically for small business owners who want to receive consultations.

What is the Village of Ossining doing?
The Village of Ossining is paying close attention to the situation in New York, the country, and around the world. We are closely collaborating, planning, and coordinating with the Town of Ossining and local non-profits.

Staff is regularly participating in conference calls with Westchester County and the State of New York to receive regular updates from both agencies.

We are working in conjunction with Feeding Westchester to set up mobile food pantries for various days and times in walkable areas in the Village to distribute bags of food to our neighbors in need. Our Community Center has been converted into a hub for staff to pack what is to be distributed.
What can you do?
As many of you know, our local food pantries and non-profits have been coming together to ensure our community does not go hungry. We can’t thank these organizations enough for all their help. Below you will find links to our local non-profits that have been working in partnership with the Village of Ossining to distribute food to people who need it. If you would like to provide donations or volunteer support we encourage you to do so*.

These efforts will continue through this COVID-19 pandemic and thereafter. We are proud to say that many of our local restaurants are also taking donations toward providing meals to those in the community that cannot leave their homes. We will be including this information in a section of our Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) web page.

Please send emails to webblast@villageofossining.org if you know of any other Ossining based agencies that are providing food during this time so that we can add them to this list.

We appreciate your commitment to our community.
Tri-State Mask Makers are creating masks for those in need - healthcare workers to neighbors in nursing home.

Your donation will allow many sewists to continue with their work of love.
The Ossining Micro Fund is a non-profit organization offering interest-free loans to individuals and families who encounter unexpected financial obstacles. Our philosophy is to “pay it forward” – when a loan recipient repays a loan, the money becomes available to help another person in need. Click here for information .
