A Symposium and Workshop for Community Stakeholders, Researchers and Policymakers

Drs. Anna Harding (Community Engagement Core) and Kim Anderson (Project 4) are collaborating with the Superfund Research Program at Louisiana State University to host a day workshop for the communities impacted by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. The symposium was scheduled for Sept. 5, 2012, but was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac. We do not have a new date yet.

If you would like to stay up to date on the plans, please register on the site (bottom of the page). You can participate on-line, which is a great option for everyone interested who can't attend in-person.

Tanguay Wins EPA Award
Robert Tanguay
Dr. Robert Tanguay (Project 3 Leader and Director of the Sinnhuber Aquatic Research Laboratory) received an EPA grant award, "Toxicity Screening with Zebrafish Assay".  This two million dollar grant will screen 1,000 chemicals for developmental toxicity over three years.  Get more information about this award.

Trainee Highlight
Carlos Manzano's desire to improve analytical techniques available for identification and quantification of semi-volatile organic compounds brought him to Dr. Staci Simonich's lab all the way fromCarlos Manzano Equador. His research focuses on the development of novel techniques for detection and quantification of PAHs in complex environmental samples using two-dimensional gas chromatography, a technique that allows us to increase the number of compounds that can be detected in one single run.

Recently Carlos received a prestigious 2012 St
udent Paper Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS). He presented his work at a symposium during the 244th ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia. In the paper, Manzano reported on his research exploring the effects of using different gas chromatography (GC) column combinations to separate and identify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sample mixtures. Manzano was able to identify 89 PAHs in one chromatographic run.
