To reiterate, the American Counseling Association’s pivotal 2010 study presented this collective definition:


“Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals.” 1


Let us consider how (beyond October 17, 2022…) psychological aspects of behavior change can favorably guide Counseling Techniques related to OTC HA. What would Edward Thorndike advise?


As Educational Curators on a mission, we should intentionally apply Laws of Learning. In 1905, Thorndike introduced Stimulus-Response Theory which postulated Laws of:


  • Readiness, which identify a learner’s state of mind. When “ready” and interested, preconditions are ripe for positive outcomes, with the converse also true.


  • Effect, that suggests gratifying interactions positively reinforce learning and gravitation towards ongoing engagement. As expected, annoying communication typically triggers adverse impact.


  • Exercise, emphasizing healthy habits and memorably valued repetition. Practice makes better (not perfect…)

As OTC HA’s holiday season publicity ramps up, Awareness Stimulus will be trending. Is this Google data surprising?

Guided by Thorndike’s Laws, we best Counsel DIFM & DIY Consumers Ready to talk, eager for positive Effects and (ideally…) prepared to Exercise good judgement. With market-driven Stimulus taking care of itself, industry leaders aim to increase it In Practice, In Community and Online:

Instead of shying away from key questions, empathetic clinicians just keep nurturing by confidently demonstrating Counseling expertise. High-integrity medical professionals, like hearing care experts, stand Ready when needed, with positive Effects. As the saying goes, particularly with quality of life aspirations, “there are no such things as stupid questions.”

Time will tell and facts will speak, but (Selectively so…) be glad they Asked. For those compelled to articulate valuable knowledge daily, it might feel like being a “kid in a candy store.”
