SHELTON MCELROY
 THE BAIL PROJECT
Shelton McElroy is National Director of Strategic Partnerships of The Bail Project. Prior to joining TBP, Shelton worked with Parent Advocacy and Participatory Defense, assisting parents in the reunification process with their children and using organizing tools to fight for justice. As a formerly incarcerated individual who was a ward of the state in foster care for over 15 years, Shelton works daily to dismantle dehumanizing systems of oppression. A 2016 Just Leadership USA fellow and a 2018 BMe Genius award recipient, Shelton holds Masters in Mental Health Counseling and studies Documentary Studies at Duke University. In addition, Shelton hosts scholarship workshops for underserved individual.
ALFREDO PARRISH

Alfredo Parrish is one of Iowa’s leading, nationally recognized criminal justice attorneys. Parrish is founder and senior partner of Parrish Kruidenier Trial Lawyers, L.L.P., a 17-lawyer firm in Des Moines, Iowa. He has litigated over 250 civil and criminal jury trials. He has been honored as “Best Lawyers in America” 16 years running. Alfredo Parrish is an accomplished author. His works include "Clark v. Board of School Directors: Reflections After 150 Years" Which was published in the Drake Law Review and his book Know Your Rights, A Guide Through Iowa’s Criminal Justice System, among others.Early in his career Alfredo worked with civil rights organizations. He is a dedicated advocate for fairness in the justice system ever since.
HON. MARK BENNETT
U.S. FEDERAL DISTRICT JUDGE, RTD
The Hon. Mark W. Bennett, retired U.S. District Judge and now Director of the Drake University Law School’s Institute for Justice Reform & Innovation will discuss his pioneering work on Afrocentric Facial Feature and Skin Tone Bias and how this disadvantages Blacks at every stage of the criminal justice system and deepens the disparity that already exists based on race alone. He will discuss his pending National Science Foundation grant to study Afrocentric Facial Feature and Skin Tone bias in Iowa and across the nation.
TERRY HARRINGTON
EXONERATED IOWAN
In 1978 Terry Harrington was convicted of a crime he did not commit in Council Bluffs Iowa. He served 25 years before being released and exonerated in 2003. Terry will share his moving story at the Iowa Summit on Justice & Disparities.
