Thornton Wilder's Our Town is widely celebrated as "the greatest American play ever written." Maybe your high school staged it. Or reading it was part of your local college lit curriculum. If not, you probably are thinking that Our Town is one of those *yawn* stuffy classics. Would it surprise you to learn that it is a work of theatrical modernism? That's right. This 1938 Pulitzer Prize winner might appear to be a nostalgic look at a small town community, but it is radical theater! It belongs to the Modernist era of rule breakers who smashed standardized expectations.
What does that look like?
The stage is bare of traditional scenery, and the story shifts in time and place at the will of the stage manager whose insights and observations remind us that this is a play that understands it is a play. Thornton Wilder was meta before meta-theatricalism was cool.
