St. Paul's Blog

Friends,

I hope 2023 is beginning smoothly for you!

I also hope you will make it a priority to join us for the Sundays in January and February as we will consider our 2023 missional priorities.

This will be a time to focus on the things that most deserve our attention and our energy going forward.

-Pastor Jonathan

the survey results are in!

Because of changes in the availability of leaders, we will NOT be able to meet this Sunday. Instead, please join us on January 22, 10:15-11:00 for discussion and reflection!

These survey results and the work of our SPRC with our District Superintendent are both important in the Bishop and Cabinet’s appointment process of our next Lead Pastor. We look forward to learn of an appointment in early 2023.

Sincerely, your CAT Logistics Team

Brad Colton, SPRC

Gary Lindsay, Church Council

Melanie Nollsch, Lay Leader

Sherrie Ilg, Lead Pastor

Marking Epiphany at Home

Friday January 6th

“Epiphany” means an appearance or manifestation. The celebration of Epiphany commemorates the visitation of the Magi to the infant Jesus: the manifestation of God incarnate to the Magi, and also to us.

There is an old tradition of blessing the threshold of the home with chalk for the new year on Twelfth Night or Epiphany. You can do this with your family. The letters “C M B” included in the markings refer to the names traditionally given to the Wise Men, but they can also stand for “Christus mansionem benedicat,” which in Latin means “Christ, bless this house.”

Gather together at the threshold of your home, be it the main door of a house or an apartment door, with a piece of chalk and the words of this blessing.

Leader: God became flesh in Jesus Christ, making ordinary, earthly things holy. God uses the ordinary in not-so-ordinary ways. This chalk, made from dust of the earth, reminds us of our own dustiness, and the hope that Christ brings to us earthly beings. Bless this chalk to mark our home with a blessing for the new year, that all who come and go from this place find peace and shelter here and are filled with wholeness and hope.

Leader: Peace be to this house

All: And all who live here.

With your chalk, make these marks (in parentheses) as you say the words:

The Maji from the east, known in legend as Caspar (C), Melchior (M), and Balthasar (B),

C M B

two-thousand (20) and twenty three (23) years ago, followed the star and entered the home where they saw the child Jesus with Mary, his mother, and they knelt down and worshiped him. Then, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

20 C M B 23

May Christ (+) bless (+) our home (+).

20 C+ M+ B+ 23

All: Christ, visit our home with your presence, that all who visit or reside here may be blessed by your love made manifest. Amen.

GROWing Together in 2023

January 8 Worship Guide, 9:00 am

During the weeks of January 8th through February 12th, we will dig into our missional priorities as we embrace God’s calling for us in this time. This series will include both worship and small group formation opportunities.

New Art Exhibit, January 8 in Art Space

Ben High is an artist working in multiple forms of media from designing fine diamond jewelry to home making alternative process photographic prints. He received his BA from the University of Iowa and worked as a commercial photographer in Los Angeles until moving back to Cedar Rapids to design fine jewelry. His wife and frequent collaborator, Jess, is a hair stylist. They have a full house with four children, and many furry (and fishy) friends.

Ben's photography exhibit opens Sunday, January 8, 10:15 am, following the 9:00 am worship service. He will give an artist talk as an introduction to his works. The exhibit runs through February 19. The gallery is open during regular business hours and on Sunday mornings.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

On Monday, January 16, 2023, St. Paul’s will host the annual Dr. King Community Celebration event. This inspiring event will focus on Dr. King’s legacy, celebrate those who are carrying on King’s vision in our community, and call each of us to use our voice in the pursuit of justice. The theme “Voices of Today: Provoking Action, Building Community” will couple various voices of community civil rights elders and those of younger activists as a “call and response” format. Along with these voices, there will be various musical offerings, and the youth and adult recipients of the Dr. Percy & Lileah Harris ‘Who Is My Neighbor’ Award will be honored.

Hosted by St. Paul's United Methodist Church in collaboration with First Light Christian Fellowship, Mount Mercy University, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, and the NAACP. With special thanks to: African American Museum of Iowa, Cedar Rapids Public Library, and the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission. View event flyer.
