New Harrison County Jail Promises Better Security and Efficiency With New Technology

The new Harrison County Jail opened its doors on Tuesday afternoon in front of a large crowd, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to take a look inside to see the modern facility that's designed to be safer all while saving the community money.

Grae-Con Construction and Karras Painting both had a hand in completing the new jail, which includes 80 beds with five housing day rooms, three dorm-style rooms, and two-day room cells.

Follansbee Fire Station Set for Major Renovations

The Follansbee Fire Department will soon undergo a series of upgrades. Last year, Follansbee was awarded a $2.7 million grant from U.S. Senator Shelly Moore Capito and soon the funds will be available to allow the city to start the bidding process.

At Monday's council meeting, Mayor David Velegol announced that the city should receive the grant money in June. Then, engineers can begin preparing bid advertisements for contractors - a step forward in a long-awaited vision.

If you or anyone you know has questions about the flyer or program, contact Eric King. Call 304-991-0740 or email eric@wvccl.org.

National Forklift Safety Day

National Forklift Safety Day is Tuesday, June 10th. This annual event, celebrated by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA), focuses on promoting safe forklift operations and operator training. Here are some tips to share with your employees:

Pre-Operation Forklift Inspection

  • Visual Inspection: Check for damage, leaks, and general condition of the forklift.
  • Tires: Inspect tire condition for wear, damage, or low pressure.
  • Brakes: Verify brake functionality and that they respond effectively.
  • Steering: Ensure steering is working smoothly and without binding or excessive play.
  • Hydraulic Systems: Check for leaks, fluid levels, and proper operation of hydraulic controls.
  • Lights and Alarms: Test all warning lights, backup alarms, and horns.
  • Controls: Verify the functionality of the accelerator, steering, and other controls.
  • Seatbelt: Ensure the seatbelt is operational and properly secured.
  • Limit Switches: Test limit switches for travel, lift, and tilt.
  • Maintenance Records: Maintain detailed maintenance records.
  • Report Issues: Report any defects or concerns to maintenance personnel.

Operator Training and Certification

  • Age Requirement: Operators must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Trained and Certified: All operators must be trained and certified in the specific type of forklift they will be using. This will include controls, safe loading and unloading, and operating procedures for that particular truck.
  • Competent Operator: OSHA requires that operators be trained to be a "competent operator," meaning they understand safe operating procedures, maintenance, and hazard recognition.
  • 3-Year Recertification: Operators should be recertified every three years.
  • Proper Clothing: Wear appropriate clothing for the job, including safety footwear.

Additional Operational Safety Requirements (as outlined in the OSHA standard)

  • Always wear a seat belt if the forklift has one.
  • Never raise or lower a load while traveling.
  • Keep forks low during travel, no more than 6-8 inches off the ground.
  • Avoid carrying passengers or using the forks to lift people.
  • Use horns at blind intersections and obstructed areas.
  • Be cautious near pedestrians and observe speed limits.
  • Follow safe refueling procedures.
  • Never walk under elevated forks.
  • Keep the work environment clean, clear, and in good repair.
  • Do not run over debris.
  • Be mindful of the hazards of the forklift.
  • Never exceed the rated capacity.
  • Don't operate distracted.
  • Follow proper shutdown procedures after each shift.
  • Use floor markers to delineate pedestrian paths and forklift traffic.
  • Operate in well-ventilated areas.
