National Ladder Safety Month

Every year over 100 people die in ladder-related accidents, and thousands suffer disabling injuries. Join the American Ladder Institute (ALI) and participate in National Ladder Safety Month in March.

2025 will focus on four key themes:

Week One: Training and Awareness

Week Two: Inspection and Maintenance

Week Three: Stabilization, Setup, and Accessories

Week Four: Safe Climbing and Positioning

Key training excerpts from ALI's article: Chose Your Ladder Wisely

Michael Van Bree, Director of Product Safety and Engineering at Louisville Ladder remarked, “The key considerations when choosing your ladder are to select a ladder of the proper material. There is size to consider and you’ve got the duty rating that is an important factor. In other words, you don’t want to select a ladder that isn’t suitable for your girth and weight. Finally, there is the style of the ladder. "

Dave Francis, National Safety Director for Little Giant Ladder Systems, LLC in Utah, said there is no getting around the reality that much of the public thinks of ladders as being somewhat dangerous. “Statistically, we know that ladders are involved in accidents resulting in disabilities and even fatalities,” he concluded. “But ladders themselves are overbuilt for what they do. They are just misused. People, when trying to get the job done, cut corners and take risks that they shouldn’t. A ladder used properly and in good condition will never be the cause of an accident. On some level, the responsibility is on you, the user, to take what we make as an overbuilt product, follow the basic rules, and you’ll be safe.”

During March, raise ladder safety awareness with your employees, on and off the job. Together, we can decrease the number of ladder-related injuries and fatalities.

Crane Safety: New Tool for Addressing Common Hazards

A new online tool from the NCCCO Foundation and the National Safety Council is intended to help improve safety on jobsites where cranes and other load-handling equipment are used.

The free tool, developed in partnership with NSC’s Work to Zero initiative, “offers a list of controls tailored to address the most significant hazardous situations that contribute to serious incidents and fatalities in crane operations,” an NCCCO Foundation press release states. “The list was compiled by searching relevant safety literature and collecting feedback from industry experts and practitioners.”
