Thanksgiving has a way of resetting the pace. It slows everything down just long enough for us to take stock of the people and moments that mattered this year. It doesn’t need fanfare or decorations. It stands on its own because gratitude, when you really stop and feel it, is enough.

In our line of work, we deal with deadlines, delays, pressure, negotiations, and constant motion. This week offers something we don’t get often: a chance to step back and recognize what went right and who helped us get there. When you look at it that way, there’s more to appreciate than we admit during the daily grind.

On behalf of OVCEC, I hope you enjoy a well-deserved break and time with the people who mean the most to you. Wishing you a safe, meaningful, and happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

(Because Nobody Wants a

Trip to the ER Before Pie)

1. Deep-Fried Turkey = Deep-Fried Hands

If you’re frying a turkey, make sure it’s fully thawed, keep kids and pets away, and lower it slowly. A frozen turkey in hot oil is basically a jobsite flashback you don’t want at home.

2. Turkey Carving: Treat It Like a Lockout/Tagout Situation

Sharp knives, slippery birds — what could go wrong? Stabilize your cutting surface, carve away from yourself, and maybe let someone else handle the electric carving knife if you’re even a little distracted.

3. Backyard Football: Warm Up Like You’re About to Weld Overhead

Most “Turkey Bowl” injuries happen in the first ten minutes — pulled hamstrings, twisted ankles, wounded pride. Stretch first. Hydrate. And maybe don’t dive for that interception if you haven’t sprinted since your sophomore season.

4. Slips, Trips, and Gravy Falls

Kitchen floors get slick fast. Wear shoes with actual tread, keep handles turned inward, and wipe up spills before someone ends up with a mashed-potato-related workers’ comp claim.

5. Alcohol + Power Tools = Hard Pass

If your holiday lights require a ladder or drill… do that before the cocktails start flowing. (Your future self and your insurance deductible will thank you.)

6. Kids in the Kitchen: Establish a Controlled Access Zone

Little ones love to “help.” Give them a safe workstation and keep them out of high-risk areas where hot pans, boiling liquids, or sharp tools are in play.

7. Don’t Let the Bird Sit Out Like It’s a Tailgate

Foodborne illness is real. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours and heat them to safe temperatures. No one wants to spend Black Friday regretting their life choices.

8. Travel Smart: Treat the Road Like a Work Zone

Plan your route, expect delays, stay off your phone, and keep an eye on other drivers. Holiday traffic is unpredictable and full of hazards.

9. Lift With Your Legs (Yes, Even the Turkey)

That roasting pan can weigh more than it looks. Bend your knees, keep the load close, and avoid awkward twists — save your back for Cyber Monday shopping.

10. And Finally… Rest and Recover

Take the break. You’ve earned it. A relaxed, well-fed, well-rested crew is a safe crew — on the jobsite and at home.

If you hear of a project you would like to see in our Plan Room, please let us know. We will make every effort to get it. And as always, if you need prints or you are interested in getting access to our online plan room, send us a message.
