Wheeling Officials Celebrate New Market Street Parking Garage

After two years of construction, the Market Street Parking Garage officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning. Carl Walker Construction served as the general contractor. While they are a Pittsburgh-based contractor, Carl Walker is a proud member of the OVCEC and utilized several OVCEC members as subcontractors, including Erb Electric, Savage Construction, W.A. Wilson Inc., Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal, and more!

Additionally, the project sourced almost entirely local labor with 98% hailing from local unions.

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

With the holidays fast approaching, let's take the time to review overlooked home safety tips. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has a web page dedicated to holiday fire safety. This website contains safety tips and downloadable resources. According to the website:



• Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires with more than three times the daily average for such incidents. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve ranked second and third, with both having nearly twice the daily average.
• Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.
• Cooking causes half (52%) of all reported home fires and nearly two of every five (36%) home fire injuries, and it is a leading cause of home fire deaths (17%).
• On Thanksgiving Day alone, an estimated 1,610 home cooking fires were reported to U.S fire departments in 2022, reflecting a 399 percent increase over the daily average.
