HIRING WOMEN CAN EASE THE CONSTRUCTION LABOR SHORTAGE
"Gender stereotypes also frequently play into how students are exposed to career options in middle and high school. Such career stereotyping has led building trades and construction industry careers to be considered “manly jobs” and created barriers for women entering the field. The idea of leadership in the industry is connected to “toughness” that is associated with physical strength and spatial problem solving."

CONNECTED TOOLS, EQUIPMENT BOOST JOBSITE PRODUCTIVITY
Construction has a certain reputation when it comes to productivity. In fact, according to
McKinsey & Company
, construction's efficiency standards lag well behind those of manufacturing, retail and other industries. While segment-wide advancements seems to be butting up against a wall, the research firm said that one way contractors and managers can break through the wall, one project at a time, is by better integrating and relying on automation and digitization technologies on the jobsite.

Governor Kasich announced last week that the state’s rainy day fund had swelled to its highest level in years. The fund now stands at $2.7 billion. The state savings plan acts as a hedge on future tax increases and other unforeseen budget expenditures . More importantly, the fund also ensures a stable bond rating for any future borrowing needs. The fund had been depleted to fund Unemployment Compensation debt incurred by the Strickland administration and the early years of the Kasich administration.
The General Assembly cut short it’s summer recess and returned to Columbus to finish a reform bill that would finally regulate the way “pay day lenders” assess interest and payment terms for short term loans. These types of lenders have historically preyed on the state’s least fortunate citizens with usury like interest rates that, at times, keep the poor in a cycle of indebtedness.

As the House of Delegates presses on with impeachment hearings against embattled Supreme Court Justice Allen Loughry, the state’s legal and political world was rocked last week by the sudden and surprising resignation of Supreme Court Justice Menis Ketchum. Like Loughry, Ketchum and other Justice’s had been a target of a federal prosecutors and a legislative auditor’s investigation into possible fraud and misuse of state property. After a legislative audit found that Justice Ketchum had improperly driven a state car for personal use, the Justice admitted his guilt and reimbursed the state for the value of the personal vehicle use. Most statehouse observers felt that Ketchum’s indiscretion warranted a possible reprimand from the State Bar but the vehicle use did not rise to the level of an impeachable offense. Bar Ketchum’s resignation from the state’s highest bench will be effective on July 27. A special election to replace Ketchum will be held to coincide with the November general election.
The House Judiciary Committee is continuing its investigative work in the Justice Loughry impeachment process. Committee Lawmakers are expected to join the state press corps and tour the Supreme Court offices and Chamber this coming week. It is worth noting that the Supreme Court initially objected to the planned visit. Judiciary Chairman Shott scolded the Court and indicated that the Legislature retained the constitutional authority to carry out its impeachment duties and the office visit will proceed as planned.
In other political news, Senate President Mitch Carmichael publicly attacked the American Federation of Teachers union after the national chapter announced d support for universal health care. Calling the proposal a socialist objective, Carmichael called on the AFT’s state president, Denise Campbell, to repudiate the national policy goal. She declined to join in the polemics. This latest war of words comes at a time when the Governor’s PEIA Task Force is contemplating possible funding sources for the teacher’s and state employees insurance plan.
