We want to celebrate the amazing women who have passionately built Women’s Field Lacrosse across Ontario and for Canada. Ontario is home to many trailblazing female leaders, builders, and players in Canadian lacrosse. We are incredibly proud of all our athletes!
1982 Canadian Women’s Field Lacrosse Team
In 1982, Canada recruited their best box lacrosse players to play the field game and participated in the inaugural Women’s World Cup in Nottingham, England. “Those Plucky Canadians” were the biggest surprise of the tournament, capturing the bronze medal. Unfortunately, at the time in England, it was not customary to award bronze medals. 40 years later, the Canadian Women’s Lacrosse Alumni came together to have replica medals produced for the players on the ’82 Team. The Ontario members were honoured in May 2022 with their well-deserved hardware, including Kerri Hardill, Gail Cummings, Paul Gilkinson, Marie Gilkinson,Julie Norton and Barb Boyes.
Additionally, Barb Boyes has recently received the 2022 Lester B. Pearson Award from Lacrosse Canada, a tremendous achievement!
Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame (OLHOF)
On May 14, the Lady Blue Knights organization was honoured at the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Hall of Fame and Museum.
Orillia Sports Hall of Fame 2022 Inductee
Our congratulations to Joanne Stanga from Orillia. Joanne has been critical to the development of women’s field lacrosse in Canada. From coaching the senior and U19 field national teams to teaching courses for other coaches to follow in her footsteps, Joanne has spent much of her life developing quality lacrosse programs for women.
Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame 2022 Inductee
Our congratulations to Cheryl MacNeill from Oshawa. Cheryl has made an incredible mark on the game of lacrosse at every level. A standout player who twice represented Canada at the IFWLA (International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations) World Cup, Cheryl also has plenty of coaching accomplishments on her resumé, including with the U19 national team that won bronze at the 1999 world championship.
