IWD Theme this year is Equality vs Equity. Equality is about treating everyone the same way, giving everyone the same opportunities and resources regardless of their gender. This is an important principle, but it doesn't necessarily lead to fairness or justice. Equity, on the other hand, is about recognizing that people have different needs and providing them with what they need to achieve the same outcomes. In other words, equity is about leveling the playing field by addressing systemic disadvantages that certain groups face.
When it comes to gender, equality is not enough. We live in a society that has historically disadvantaged women and non-binary individuals, and even today, gender-based discrimination and inequality persist. To achieve gender equity, we need to address the systemic barriers that prevent women and non-binary individuals from accessing the same opportunities and resources as men.
This means working with appropriate stakeholders on policies that promote gender equity, such as equal pay for equal work, parental leave for both parents, and affordable childcare. It means challenging cultural norms and biases that perpetuate gender stereotypes and limit opportunities for women and non-binary individuals. It means creating a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone, regardless of their gender, has the opportunity to thrive.
As OWIT we are committed to promoting gender equity, not just equality and work with various partners to dismantle the barriers that prevent women and non-binary individuals from realizing their full potential. Only then can we truly achieve justice and fairness for all.
What are you doing to promote gender equity? We’d love to hear from you, please share by replying to this email or on our Social Media spaces.
