A Message From

Our President

Receive Warm Greetings dear OWIT Member and Friend all the way from Nairobi Kenya.

This month we celebrate International Women’s Day and at OWIT we have lots of exciting activities from our chapters and partners across the world. If you are reading this and you are a member, please share what you are doing by replying to this email so we can celebrate with you or find new ways of supporting your success.

The OWIT-ITC International Trade and Market Intelligence Learning Labs kicked of on March 2nd and will take place every 1st Thursday of the month. Share with your members, friends and in your social media spaces. It is an outreach event to support Female Led Entrepreneurs to know and understand how to take advantage of the resources and tools offered by ITC and OWIT to foster international trade and the advancement of women in business. If you missed it here is a recording. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to ensure you don’t miss upcoming ones.

IWD Theme this year is Equality vs Equity. Equality is about treating everyone the same way, giving everyone the same opportunities and resources regardless of their gender. This is an important principle, but it doesn't necessarily lead to fairness or justice. Equity, on the other hand, is about recognizing that people have different needs and providing them with what they need to achieve the same outcomes. In other words, equity is about leveling the playing field by addressing systemic disadvantages that certain groups face.

When it comes to gender, equality is not enough. We live in a society that has historically disadvantaged women and non-binary individuals, and even today, gender-based discrimination and inequality persist. To achieve gender equity, we need to address the systemic barriers that prevent women and non-binary individuals from accessing the same opportunities and resources as men.

This means working with appropriate stakeholders on policies that promote gender equity, such as equal pay for equal work, parental leave for both parents, and affordable childcare. It means challenging cultural norms and biases that perpetuate gender stereotypes and limit opportunities for women and non-binary individuals. It means creating a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone, regardless of their gender, has the opportunity to thrive.

As OWIT we are committed to promoting gender equity, not just equality and work with various partners to dismantle the barriers that prevent women and non-binary individuals from realizing their full potential. Only then can we truly achieve justice and fairness for all.

What are you doing to promote gender equity? We’d love to hear from you, please share by replying to this email or on our Social Media spaces.
