Please do your part to ensure the safety of all students and adults around our campus. The crossing guards are stationed to help make sure students can cross our busy streets safely. We want to keep our crossing guards safe too. Some drivers are turning right from Churchwood onto Kanan as soon as the students have crossed the right lane but are still being escorted by the crossing guard because they have not made it all the way to the other side. Remember that crossing guards do not walk all the way across the street. They need to walk back to their position so that they are ready for the next group of pedestrians. Do not enter the intersection until the crossing guard is safely back on the sidewalk and has lowered the sign.
The CA Vehicle Code states:
"Any person who shall disregard any traffic signal or direction given by a school crossing guard, ....when in the course of the guard's duties the guard is protecting any person in crossing a street or highway in the vicinity of a school or while returning thereafter to a place of safety, shall be guilty of an infraction and subject to the penalties provided in Section 42001.1" .
The violation will result in a fine of $285 and a point on your driving record, but more importantly, it could aloud result in a student or adult getting seriously injured. Please expect increased enforcement of these important safety laws.
