Dear 2020 Lighthouse Run/Walk Registrant:

These are trying times for our nation and the world as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that you and your family are safe and healthy.  We know that you have trained hard and were looking forward to another great race. We share your disappointment. We are navigating uncharted waters whether it be at work, home or play as in the case of your participation in the Oak Island Lighthouse Run.

On March 15 th, the CDC released new guidelines for the next 8 weeks, it stated that all events over 100 people should be cancelled. The Oak Island Lighthouse Run, an event of the Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce, has discussed options for our participants with our timing company – Go Time.

We also appreciate your race loyalty as many of you have participated with us for many years and we were looking forward to meeting our new participants. After much deliberation, we decided the best solution would be to postpone, rather than cancel the Oak Island Lighthouse Run/Walk. Our new date is Saturday, November 14, 2020.
We reviewed our non-refundable entry fee policy. After taking into consideration all the expenses we have incurred to date, we were unable to see a way to offer a refund. However, we have decided to extended the existing raincheck policy to allow for a two year deferral.  If you are unable to race/walk with us on April 17, 2021 you may be able to do so on April 9, 2022.

We also know there might be some interest from our participants to run virtually. The new OKI Lighthouse Run date (11/14) is the Saturday after the Battleship Half Marathon (11/7). If you are unable to participate on November 14 th or defer to either 2021 or 2022, we are offering you the opportunity to run/walk from any location for your registered distance between April 18 and November 8, 2020.  We hope that when the coast is clear you will do so in the Oak Island - Southport area but you can literally choose any location to complete your distance. There are no awards for virtual runs, but we will hold a drawing for a free entry into the 2021 Oak Island Lighthouse Run for each age category for anyone who completes the verification process. The verification process is simple, post a photo of your time on the Oak Island Lighthouse Run Facebook Page or email to  Those choosing to do a virtual run will receive their bib, finisher medal and hat/t-shirt (either included or purchased) in the mail once you have completed the verification process.

This was a very difficult decision. It was not taken lightly but we have tried to lessen the impact by offering several options. Please let us know what option you have chosen by completing the following form by September 1, 2020. We hope you will join us in November. The weather is mild and the fall sunsets/sunrises at Oak Island are amazing.
Warmest Regards,

Karen Sphar
