Spartans Shine At Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Oak Lawn Community High School students Tae Smoczynski, Vanessa Cruz, Fay Galvan, Eli O’Grady, and Grace Tynski won Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program is a nationally recognized competition in which students submit their original works. Students can win gold and silver keys or honorable mentions and move on to compete at the national level if they win a gold key. Students’ work is on display at Downers Grove North High School and the well-attended opening was on Sunday, January 29th.

Tae Smoczynski earned a gold key in digital artwork; Vanessa Cruz earned a silver key in mixed media; Fay Galvan earned a gold key in editorial cartoons; Eli O’Grady earned honorable mentions in photography and drawing/illustration; and Grace Tynski earned two gold keys in writing.

Art teacher Ailysih Cooper said, “Winning a Scholastic Award is an incredible honor, and participation in the program shows dedication and a willingness to put oneself out there, bravely, and stand behind their creations. The OLCHS art department is so proud of our students!”

Natalie Orozco

Girls Bowling

Coaches always like to see their athletes grow during the season. Constant improvement is the goal. For first-year girls bowler Natalie Orozco, this has been the recipe for success at Oak Lawn Community High School—constant improvement.

She has improved her average on the lanes with every practice and game. She recently placed 25th overall at the South Suburban Conference Red meet with an average score of 132.5. It will be interesting to see where she goes from here.

“Natalie is new to the bowling team this year,” head coach Jen Faro said. “However, she has already made a great impact on the team. Natalie is constantly working on improving her approach and is a great teammate, cheering on her other varsity team members. We can’t wait to see how Natalie performs at the Illinois High School Association Regional this year, and we are excited to have her as a part of the team next year.”

Sam Bergamo

Boys Bowling

Sam Bergamo is a picture of consistency on the bowling lanes for the Oak Lawn Community High School’s boys bowling team. Once again, he was one of the most consistent bowlers for the entire season with an average of 205 pins per game. He medaled in three tournaments and was named a 2023 South Suburban Conference Red All-Conference bowler.

“Sam has one of the highest bowling IQs in all of Oak Lawn and never hesitates to help out his teammates on the lanes,” head coach Kevin Walery said. “Great season, Sam. We cannot wait to see what your senior year has in store.”

The Spartans finished the boys bowling season as back-to-back SSC Red champions, advanced to the Illinois High School Association Sectional as a team, and they had a total of five all-conference bowlers. The junior varsity team finished second place in conference. With Bergamo returning and a lot of other experienced bowlers coming back, the future looks bright for Oak Lawn boys bowling next year.

Cinderella's Closet

OLCHS will offer Cinderella’s Closet again this school year. The program is designed to help female students acquire prom gear at a significantly lower cost. Sponsored by the school’s SADD Chapter and Cheerleading Coach Maria Vanderwarren. The mission of Cinderella’s Closet is to provide an affordable option for dresses for prom and graduation events for female students. Each year, many dresses are bought for hundreds of dollars and never worn again. Through Cinderella’s Closet, parents, students, and community members have an opportunity to donate dry-cleaned dresses, shoes, and unopened make-up to provide joy and happiness for another student. Dresses will be sold for $10 each and all proceeds will be donated to SADD’s Post-Prom cruise. The sale is at Oak Lawn Community High School on Saturday, February 11, 2023, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

For more information, please contact Maria Vanderwarren at 708-741-5602 or mvanderwarren@olchs.org. All styles, sizes, and colors are welcome.

Donations can be dropped off at Oak Lawn Community High School, 9400 Southwest Highway, Oak Lawn, during business hours 7:30AM to 3:30PM through Friday, February 10, 2023. A tax form is available for all donations upon request.
