Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, November 2, 2018

It is hard to believe, but today already marks the end of 1/3 of the 2018-2019 school year. In fact, this week was one of the more important weeks of the school year as we released report cards for the first nine-week quarter on Monday. If you have a student attending Oak Ridge, please be sure to review their grades with them as soon as possible if you have not already. Keep in mind that Oak Ridge offers free tutoring for our Pioneers throughout the school year if any student needs extra help (after-school schedule and details listed below). We want all of our students to take advantage of these academic support opportunities and achieve the grades they are capable of.

I hope this issue finds your November off to a great start. Thank you for all your support so far this year and best wishes for a safe and relaxing weekend.

With Pioneer Pride,
Mrs. Jennifer Bellinger

Community: Special Recognition and Remembrance
Ms. Kathy King, Senior Vice President of Junior Achievement of Central Florida

It is with profound sadness to share that Kathy Beck-King, Senior Vice President of Junior Achievement of Central Florida, passed away after battling cancer in a way only a "Wonder Woman" could.

Since 2010, Kathy has transformed JACF through her passion for student success, business/community partnerships and innovation that impacted hundreds of thousands of K-12 students throughout Central Florida. Her greatest testament to the mission of JA resulted in the nation's first ever JA Academy for Leadership & Entrepreneurship located at @oakridgehs in Orlando, Florida.

Kathy King made it her mission to change the lives of countless students and inspired each one to be greater than the script that life handed them. Please join us in celebrating and honoring the life of such an influential leader and entrepreneur. While our hearts remain heavy, we know that Heaven has welcomed its newest angel, and she's already painting the walls the perfect shade of JA green.

On Tuesday, October 30th, several graduates of the JA Academy for Leadership & Entrepreneurship at ORHS were honored to be asked to stand as pallbearers to celebrate the Life of Kathy Beck-King (below, top right). Her dedication and impact will stay with them and all of the JA Academy students forever.

Rest in Peace Mrs. King.

Friday's Motivational Moment!

Herbert Grey, a businessman, conducted a long-term study searching for what he called "the common denominator of success." After eleven years, he finally concluded that the common denominator of success was that "successful people make a habit of doing the things that unsuccessful people don't like to do."

And what were these things?

What Grey found was that successful people are more concerned with "pleasing results," whereas failures were more concerned about "pleasing methods." Successful, happy people were more concerned with the positive, long-term consequences of their behaviors, whereas unsuccessful people were more concerned with personal enjoyment and immediate gratification.

The lesson for our Pioneers? It turns out that the things that successful people don't like to do are the same things that failures don't like to do either. But successful people do them anyway because they know that this is the price they have to pay if they want to enjoy greater success and rewards in the future.

"Do something you hate every day
just for the practice."

Enjoy your weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus Monday morning!
