Maria (Jeffrey '07) Reynolds
In 2006, Maria (Jeffrey ’07) Reynolds was a junior at Oakcrest, interning one afternoon a week for
then-Senator Chuck Hagel. It was during this experience that she decided that she would work on the Hill one day.
Today, she works in the very same Senate office building where she interned years ago, now as speechwriter for Senator Ted Cruz.
“The liberal arts education I received at Oakcrest introduced me to many of the best thinkers and writers who have shaped the world over the past three thousand years,” she says. “That exposure taught me how to think critically, and how to reckon with the most fundamental questions we face—why we’re here, what we’re meant to do, and where we’re going.”

Science at Oakcrest
From simple science rooms at the Yuma campus and a well-equipped lab at the McLean campus, to two science labs at the Vienna campus, science has always been an integral part of an Oakcrest education. In 2017, the school was the recipient of a grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation which allowed Oakcrest to equip its labs. Our two labs feature multi-functional equipment and an environment that invites collaboration and learning among students. Also of note is the success of the Science Olympiad team. For the past four years, Oakcrest has qualified for the state Science Olympiad competition, and remains the only-all girls school to participate at the state level. In February, they will participate in the regional testing day for the 2023 Science Olympiad competition.

Oakcrest Music Appreciation students featured on WETA Radio
Oakcrest School had a major impact on the WETA Classical Countdown this year. The local radio station hosts their annual Classical Countdown on Thanksgiving Day. The Countdown includes the top 100 classical music pieces of listeners in the Washington, D.C. area. In early November, listeners vote on their favorite classical piece and the top 100 are played during Thanksgiving week. On Thanksgiving night at 8:00 pm, the top-voted piece is crowned victorious and is played.
