Dear Oakies,

Congratulations to our newest alumnae, the Class of 2023!! We have hit another big milestone this year - 1000+ Oakcrest graduates!

As we close out the school year, a special heart-felt thank you goes out to all of you for making this another fantastic year! I have greatly enjoyed seeing and meeting you throughout the year at our various alumnae events. A very special shoutout to the Class of 2022 for being the class who visited the most this school year. We have loved all your visits and would like to encourage all of our alumnae to visit often; Oakcrest is your home!

Homecoming Weekend will be our next big alumnae event. Mark your calendars and join us for a fun-filled weekend on September 15 and 16. There will be lots of opportunities for catching up and reminiscing!

We will be back in August with our next issue of OakLink. Have a safe and relaxing summer!

Meet Our Alumnae

Dr. Mary M. Keys '84

For Mary M. Keys ’84, Ph.D., now a professor of political science at Notre Dame, her love of the liberal arts began at home as a young girl and while a student at Oakcrest.

“When I graduated from Oakcrest, at first I thought of becoming a journalist or a marine biologist,” she says. “But after my first two years of college, I realized I loved higher education, especially political science, philosophy, and the Great Books. That passion led me to attend graduate school in political theory and to achieve my goal of becoming a professor.”

Even today, Mary believes that the Oakcrest education she received had a direct impact on her future studies and work.

“I had many excellent teachers at Oakcrest, and I’m grateful to them all,” she says. “The classes that influenced me most in the long term were the humanities courses: history, art history, literature, philosophy, and theology. These challenged me to grow as a person intellectually, morally, and spiritually and helped me grow in understanding of the human condition, our origin in and call from God, and our world. My teaching and scholarship focus on the humanities portion of political science, incorporating dimensions of philosophy, theology, history, and literature.”

Mary returned to Oakcrest this year to deliver the commencement address for the Class of 2023.

Oakcrest Then and Now

Graduation

Graduation at Oakcrest is a special time to recognize the senior class and continue the many traditions that make Oakcrest commencement beautiful.

Our graduates continue to wear beautiful white graduation caps and gowns and hold a bouquet of red roses on the day of commencement. They hear from their class valedictorian and salutatorian, as well as welcome a commencement speaker who delivers an address to the class and their families. Many Oakcrest graduations have been held outside over the years, especially at the Yuma and Vienna campuses, until now when the very first graduation was held in the McGowan Family Athletic Center for the Class of 2023.

Graduation events take place over a series of days, beginning with the Senior Dinner. An intimate evening with parents, faculty and staff, and of course the graduating class, traditionally the seniors deliver thoughtful tributes to each faculty, noting the special gifts that the faculty bestowed upon the graduates over the years.

The school community also comes together for the Baccalaureate Mass, which has been a longstanding element of graduation week, followed by Awards day, where the special graduation honors are announced, including the class Acorns, Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Athletic and Arts awards, Leadership Awards, and the Edwina Maksym Senior Thesis Award.
