Dear Oakies,
I hope that you had a Blessed Thanksgiving! November has been quite the busy month; the Patrons of the Arts and Upper School Show, Veterans Day, alumnae speakers and alumnae honors, just to name a few of the many happenings!
We kicked off the month with an amazing, sold-out Patrons of the Arts Reception and Upper School Show, The Sound of Music. The girls did an incredible job; Monica Beatty '24 (sister of alumnae Mary Beth '14 and Colleen '18, and sister-in-law of alumna Katie (Swedo '07) Beatty) played the perfect Maria! It was great to see so many alumnae and alumnae parents at both the reception and the show. Mark your calendars for the next Patrons of the Arts Reception on Friday, February 24 for Newsies Jr.
Continue reading to learn more about the many events this past month and what we have in store for the remainder of the year.
As always, I enjoy seeing and hearing from you. Please continue to stay in touch and drop by when you're in the area.
Best Regards,
Maritere

Michele (Casey '99) Bueno
Michele (Casey ’99) Bueno is the first alumna to serve as President of the Oakcrest School Board of Directors. Her role and her service has allowed her to stay intricately connected to her alma mater, an opportunity she holds close.
“I would exhort seniors to stay connected with Oakcrest, your alma mater, and when you are able, don’t forget to give back your time and treasure so that future generations can benefit from an Oakcrest education,” she said.
Mrs. Bueno holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a Master’s degree in Systematic Theology from Christendom College Graduate School of Theology. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Smith College and a Bachelor of Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College.
“I have always had a curiosity about the physical world and how things work,” she said. “As an electrical engineer, I find it very satisfying to apply scientific principles to realize solutions to real
world problems.”

Athletics!
In 1981, the Oakcrest athletics department offered three sports: soccer, basketball, and tennis. A decade later, PE classes were held in the basement of the Yuma campus, a carpeted multi-purpose room where students could easily reach the ceiling, where ball games had to be played sitting down, and the same sports uniforms were used for every sport, season after season. Through all these circumstances, the spirit of the Oakcrest athlete has always prevailed! Today, our athletics program has grown to offer nearly a dozen different sports in addition to fitness programs, and 85% of the student body participates in Oakcrest athletics. The long list of sports that Oakcrest offers includes tennis, volleyball and cross country in the fall; rock climbing, basketball, swim and dive in the winter; golf, lacrosse, softball, soccer and track and field in the spring. The Oakcrest athletics department continues to grow and thrive. Oakcrest is a member of the Virginia Christian Athletic Conference, and swims competitively in the Washington Metro Prep School Swim and Dive League. As an active member of the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association, Oakcrest teams are able to compete at the state championship level. The athletics facilities on the Vienna campus continue to grow as well with the McGowan Family Athletic Center which will be completed in the Spring 2023. This will bring a gym and other athletic facilities to the campus, adding to our current athletic fields.
