A Different Perspective on College Athletics

Alumna, Natalie Major '23, a sophomore at Purdue University spent the summer of 2024 working with the university football program. She shared that the decision to spend the summer away from home was not a easy one, however, it was a choice she's glad she made.

"My journey with the team started back in my freshman year when I started as a volunteer. By the time the spring semester rolled around, I had earned a position as a student equipment manager. Since then, I’ve been asked countless times what exactly my job entails. While much of our work happens behind the scenes, it’s essential to the team's success. We’re often referred to as “the team behind the team,” because it’s our job to ensure that every player and coach has the gear and equipment they need to succeed in practice and on game day."

"The summer was spent preparing for the upcoming season—making sure we were ready for any challenge the season might bring. Now, as a sophomore, I have the chance to travel with the team. I’ve been lucky enough to be on the sidelines for every game this season, including some of college football’s most iconic stadiums, like Ohio State’s “Horseshoe,” Wisconsin’s Camp Randall, and Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois. We also traveled to Michigan State and Indiana University. Our first away game took us out west to Oregon State University. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the University of Oregon’s world-renowned athletic facilities, including Hayward Field, where the Olympic Trials for track and field are held."

Natalie shared that although this is not your typical college experience, "I wake up every day excited to be working a job that I truly love. Becoming a student equipment manager has provided me with invaluable experiences, helped me build lifelong friendships, and given me a unique perspective on the world of college athletics. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next."

Greetings from Florence, Italy

Natalya Carroll '22, a junior fashion merchandising student at Kent State University in Ohio, has been studying abroad in Florence, Italy since mid-August. Natalya is excited to share that she has been exploring Europe in many ways.

"I’ve visited so many cities such as Pisa, Siena, Venice, Amalfi, Milan, and Rome, just to name a few. I’ll be traveling to Budapest shortly with some friends right before Thanksgiving break! I have learned so much history about Italy overall as well as the history of Florence. I’ve been able to take part in so many, unique experiences such as a cooking class, making my own leather wallet, visiting several factories and textile labs, learning how glass is blown, and so many more! I have seen so many famous art pieces in the art galleries here in the city center, such as the David statue and the Birth of Venus, which took me back to my days of Art History at Oakcrest! I’ve had an amazing time since I’ve been here, and I am holding on to the last month that I have to get everything else I want to do and see while I’m here. I’ve definitely missed home and can’t wait to come back, but this is an experience that I will never forget and I’m forever grateful for the time I had here!

Class of 2004

As the Class of 2004 celebrates their 20th reunion year, Kate (Gallagher) Morrell shared photos of her visits this summer with 2 of her classmates. She visited with Monica Mehan in New York City for a a day at The MET and then in Florida with Kristen (Sullivan) Clahane for a wedding. It's so fun to see the friendships made as Oakies are still going strong!

Alumna at the University of Dayton

Unable to attend her 40th reunion this year, Dr. Gloria (Falcao '84) Dodd shared a recent update. Gloria is a research professor at the University of Dayton, was elected President of the Mariological Society of America after her presentation in Seattle, Washington, in May. In June she presented a paper in Spanish to the Sociedad Mariológica Española in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Interviews with her can be found in The National Catholic Register May 20, 2024 ("Vatican’s New Apparitions Document May Lead to Quicker Pronouncements on Purported Marian Apparitions, Experts Say") and September 20, 2024 ("Medjugorje Pilgrims Encouraged, Relieved by New Vatican Document").

Trunk or Treat 2024 was a blast!

Meet Our Alumnae

Grace McDonnell '22

A junior at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, Grace McDonnell ‘22 is majoring in psychology with a minor in classical civilization. She recently was accepted into the Samford Masters in Social Work Fast Track program which will allow her to begin graduate school as a senior and gain work experience alongside her courses. She is looking forward to gaining hands-on experience as she pursues her dream of working as a private practice counselor.

Looking back at her Oakcrest years, Grace is extremely thankful for the faculty members that influenced her deeply by their example. Her mentor, Mrs. Leslie Kanuch, specifically played an influential role in her life.

“As my faculty mentor, Mrs. Kanuch pushed me to be the best version of myself in every aspect of my life,” Grace said. “If I was playing lacrosse, I was going to do it the best I could. If I was going to hangout with friends, I was going to do it with the caring spirit of Christ in myself.”
