Alumna works as
Summer Intern at Oakcrest
Alumna, Alexa Lerner '21, a Sophomore at Christopher Newport University majoring in Biochemistry, worked on campus from May
through July as an Academic Intern and assisted the Alumnae Relations Office with preparations for Homecoming. As an Academic Intern, she worked with Mrs. Cynthia Lim, Assistant to the Middle School and Upper School Directors, in organizing the textbooks that will be given to the students this fall. This upcoming year is the first year that Oakcrest will be providing textbooks to all students. Alexa diligently kept an inventory of the textbooks that arrived, labeled and numbered them for distribution, answered parents questions regarding the new textbook policies, and with the help of
Mrs. Janet Monroe, Admissions Associate
(mother of Katherine (Monroe '13) Santorum and Kelly '16) and Facilities, she built shelves for the textbooks. Thanks to Alexa, the school year is off to a great start!

Alumnae take on Kansas
Alumna, Mary Lou Lipovsky '19 began working for Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America (SBA) in September of 2021 and since then has become a student Ambassador for SBA at Franciscan University. This summer, she worked full-time in Kansas trying to gain support for the Value them Both Amendment. Every other weekend this summer, SBA flew out close to 70 college students for a 4-day trip during which the students canvassed everyday. On the first trip this summer (May 25-29), Mary Lou was joined by several Oakies, Maura Friddle '19, Michelle Kilmer '18, and Julie Kilmer '19. She says, "This work has been very challenging because it pushed me out of my comfort zone by having difficult conversations with people who have different opinions. However, it has been fulfilling because it is for such a great cause. Whenever I feel discouraged, I always remind myself that we are defending the defenseless and helpless." Keep up the great work, Mary Lou!

Mary (Moss '13) Teller
After a seven-month battle with lymphoma, Mary (Moss ’13) Teller passed into eternal life on July 20, 2022. The daughter of Bill and Betsy Moss, Mary graduated from Oakcrest School in 2013 and from the University
of Dallas in 2017. She was the wife of Jack Teller and mother to two beautiful children, Siena (age four)
and Grady (10 months).
The family’s stories of Mary’s last months tell of her spiritual strength and resolve to surrender entirely to God’s will. They included in her obituary that throughout her teenage years, Mary would pray “Lord, make me holy!” This prayer shaped her, exclaiming until the very end, “So blessed, so blessed!”
In her senior year yearbook, Mary wrote that while high school presented itself with many challenges, “it is the people who you are with that make the fight worthwhile.”
“I cannot begin to describe how grateful I am for the people that have been put in my life,” Mary continued. “I believe that everyone you encounter in your life is there for a reason.”
Certainly, all who knew Mary throughout her life share a similar gratitude for her life and her impact on so many.
In her letter to Oakcrest families, Head of School Dr. Mary T. Ortiz expressed the privilege of many in the Oakcrest community who watched Mary Teller grow into an “exemplary wife and mother, who always had a deep love for her friends and indeed for life itself.”
“It is hard to think of Mary and not smile,” Dr. Ortiz said.
On July 28, Mary’s beloved family and friends gathered in the Oakcrest Chapel to pray for their cherished wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend as they prepared to make their way to her burial in the Shenandoah Valley.
We surround Mary’s entire family especially her husband, Jack, their two children, Siena and Grady, along with Mary’s parents, Betsy and Bill, her siblings, Philip, Rich and his wife Leah, Eddy and his wife Sarah, and her two nieces, Maddy, Class of 2024 and Molly Grace, Class of 2024, with prayer.

Reunion Gifts!
While Oakcrest gatherings have served as mini-reunions for individual classes for many years, Oakcrest began hosting reunions to celebrate the milestone graduation years in 2021. Homecoming Weekend brings together alumnae and their families for a weekend of fun, fostering the same community that marked the middle school and high school years of our alumnae, and especially celebrating the reunion classes of 5, 10, 20, and 25 years. Each special reunion year will now be marked with a distinct gift, a new tradition that we hope will prevail through the decades. At five years, alumnae receive an alumnae mug; 10 years, a wine tumbler; 20 years, a matted watercolor print of the Oakcrest School; 25 years, a sterling silver charm. The 15, 30, 35, and 40 reunion years receive a set of engraved coasters. Be sure to attend the 2022 Homecoming Weekend Cocktail party on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. to pick up your gift!
