Dear Oakies,
As we wrap up our alumnae events for this academic year, I'd like to personally thank all of you for your continued support and connection to your alma mater. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to see you on campus throughout the year and socializing with you at our various alumnae events. I'm looking forward to welcoming you all back once again this fall during Homecoming Weekend. Mark your calendars and plan to attend the various alumnae events (September 16 and 17).
Our most recent event, the Alumnae Mother-Daughter Brunch was a beautiful day filled with the smiling faces of our soon to be alumnae (Class of 2022) and their moms, alumnae spanning throughout the 41 graduating classes, alumnae moms and grandmothers, as well as daughter's of alumnae (and even an infant son)! It is always a special treat to have you all come home! The door is always open, I encourage you to visit as often as possible. We love to see you!
Sincerely,
Maritere

Alumna spreads pro-life
message at
University of Scranton
Julie Kilmer '19, has been attending the March
for Life in D.C. ever since she was in elementary school. During her freshman year of college, she joined the pro-life club at the University of Scranton, Royals for Life, and now serves as the club's president. This past January, she attended the Pro-life Summit, where she met many pro-life leaders who inspired her to further spread the pro-life message at school and promote a culture of life. She hopes to continue to grow the Royals for Life club and inspire a community of passionate pro-lifers that help to change the hearts and minds of others on campus. Keep up the great work, Julie!

Alumna dances her
way through college
Alumna, Ana Victoria Smith '19 now a student at Lehigh University majoring in Engineering, has been dancing for almost her entire life. When she left for college three years ago, she wasn't ready to give it up. The first thing she did to prepare for college was find a nearby ballet studio. In addition to ballet, she joined the dance club on campus and will be running it next year, choreographing all the shows on campus. She's learned to carve out time for dance while balancing a demanding major and has found that it actually makes her more productive in school.

Hatching Chicks
Alumnae moms and Oakcrest 7th grade science teachers, Christina Friddle (Maura '19 and Jackie '22)
and Mary Jane Milette
(Jackie Hojilla '14) taught their classes embryology, and students got to observe hatching chicken eggs. The classes began with a total of 29 eggs and 22 hatched. They used a candler to make their observations. Shout-out to alumna mom, Tristan Bourdelais (Amelia '21) for bringing in the eggs and initiating the program, and to alumna Daniela-Alejandra Melendez-Munoz '18 for taking home 5 of the chicks!

Elisa (Cipollone'11) O'Toole
Throughout her time at Oakcrest and at the University of Dallas, Elisa (Cipollone ‘11) O’Toole was interested in news and in journalism. Today, she is a wife, mother of three children, and a producer for “The Ingraham Angle” on the Fox News Channel, where she has worked for nearly five years.
“Working for this show has taken me all over the country – and even the world. I love working in a fast paced, breaking news environment where everyday is different. But my favorite job is being a mom to my three kids – Clare, James, and Sofia. They are the greatest adventure and biggest blessing,” she said.

The Senior Thesis was introduced to the Oakcrest curriculum ten years ago, in 2012. As the culmination of the Oakcrest liberal arts education, the senior thesis allows each student to form her own idea on a subject and craft it into a thesis, often using sources that the student has read in her classes in previous years. Throughout her senior year, a faculty member helps guide her through the process of developing her project and preparing it for presentation. Each senior delivers her thesis in front of her peers, family, and faculty before graduation. Some topics from recent years include: “Edifying or Simply Entertaining?
The Power of Story to Transfer Wisdom to Humanity as Seen Through Dostoyevsky and Kreeft” and “Being the Hero of One's Own Life: An Investigation into the Nature of Heroism in David Copperfield, Anna Karenina, and My Antonia”. The Edwina Maksym Senior Thesis Award is given to senior theses of “exceptional scholarly quality.” Watch
last years’ Edwina Maksym award recipients deliver their thesis here.

Senior Year!
Senior year at Oakcrest is the culmination of the education and personal development that each girl encounters throughout her time in school. By the time an Oakcrest girl is about to graduate, her relationships have been strengthened not only with her classmates but with the faculty and staff as well. The seniors are relied upon to be leaders within the school and communicate what it means to be an Oakcrest student to the younger students.
The great responsibility of passing along the Oakcrest legacy comes today with many senior year privileges. Whereas many years ago, seniors only had the opportunity to sign out for lunch, seniors can also enjoy our outdoor grounds as well as their sun-lit Senior Loft, a special corner of campus that the seniors can place their mark on with decorations and spend time with one another and with faculty. Seniors may use their own laptop during their free periods to complete school or college-related work. While they are not allowed to use cell phones in the Senior Loft, Seniors may receive access to the school Wifi during the second semester in order to facilitate work on their thesis, the capstone of their Oakcrest education.
And at the end of the year, while the rest of the students are studying diligently for finals, the seniors are enriched with Lead days. Senior Lead days include a series of speakers imparting the class with life lessons in areas such as personal finance, self defense, and even a car workshop. The girls also take a trip to Kings Dominion Amusement Park before graduation.
