Dear Oakies,
Please join me in wishing a heartfelt congratulations to our newest alumnae, the Class of 2022; welcome to the club! On behalf of the Oakcrest Alumnae Association, we look forward to seeing all of you next year at our alumnae events.
June marks the end of our academic year and the start of what will hopefully be a few slower-paced months filled with relaxation. There are many new exciting things planned for the 2022-23 academic year for both our alumnae and alumnae parents. Stay tuned! For now, mark your calendar for Homecoming Weekend 2022 (September 16, 17).
Throughout the summer, continue to keep us updated on all your news, and don't forget to update your contact information. Are you traveling, in a summer program, participating in a great internship, or starting your first job? WE WANT TO KNOW ALL ABOUT IT! Tell us what you're up to this summer! Your news could be featured in a Summer Oakie Bulletin or on social media (Facebook and Instagram) as part of our Postcards from Oakies Campaign!
I wish you a relaxing summer and look forward
to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Maritere

Alumna conducts
summer camp at Oakcrest
Alumna and violin instructor Mary (Ferstl '94) Dausch, along with Oakcrest instrumental teacher Alix Baldwin, led a one-week intensive program for strings during the first week of the Oakcrest Summer Programs. The girls played beautiful
string orchestra and chamber music while honing their skills and working on their sight reading. Two fun facts to note, Mary's daughter, Nora '24 is a current Oakie and Mary's mom, Mrs. Marilyn Ferstl was the Oakcrest Choir Director for many years at the Yuma campus. Thank you Mary for sharing your beautiful talent with these young girls!

Alumnae Hike Old Rag
Lisa Coyne '80 along with Margaret Fagan '01 and Cecilia Hadley '99 reunited on June 5th to climb Old Rag. Afterwards, the three of them met up with alumna, Liz Mehan '06 at Powers Brewery in Midland, VA for what Lisa called a "riotous time". They hope to plan another alumnae reunion adventure for next year. They are thinking about trying kayaking instead of the mega climb idea and hope many more alumnae will join them!

Alumna mom helps shape the "Acorn" journey
Alumna mom and Oakcrest 6th Grade Assistant

Alumna Mom gives Commencement Address to the Class of 2022
On Saturday, June 5, 2022 alumna mom,
Dr. Molly Klote (Meredith '22) addressed the
Class of 2022 as their Commencement speaker. In her riveting presentation, she reminded the girls (and all of us) to always use True North to guide us on our path through life. She handed out novelty compasses to the audience and engraved ones to the Class of 2022. Dr. Klote even managed to take a selfie (from the stage, during her speech) with the Class of 2022! Thank you Dr. Klote for inspiring us to stay the course!

Martina Bucheli '18
When Martina Bucheli ‘18, looks back at her days at Oakcrest, she remembers one class in particular –
Ms. Nussio’s tenth grade History class. She says that the students focused on understanding the world
around them and the ideas that shaped the world they see today. But beyond that, the class helped
her see herself.
“The best thing you can get out of a high school environment is to understand yourself and see what you’re passionate about,” Bucheli said. “High school is a very important time for that before you have
to face the rest of the world.”
In fact, Bucheli looked back at her time at Oakcrest when she began to discover her religious vocation while a student at the University of Virginia.
“One of the most interesting things I remember as I got more involved with the Dominicans and living the Dominican life, I noticed I became more myself,” she said. “Something I had lost when I started college. It reminded me most of when I was in tenth grade, in Ms. Nussio’s history class… I think seeing that in myself in high school and having that as a reference when I found myself to be happy and joyful was very important.” Read Martina's complete profile here.

Graduation!
Oakcrest Commencement is a special time, full of timeless traditions that serve to honor the senior class and their accomplishments as they leave Oakcrest and bring their light to the rest of the world.
Graduation events are spread out over a series of days. Festivities begin with the Senior Dinner, when parents, faculty, staff and seniors gather to kickoff the beginning of the celebratory weekend. A highlight of the evening is when the seniors deliver tributes to the faculty, expressing gratitude for their mentorship over the years.
The whole school comes together for Baccalaureate Mass, the last Mass of the school year and the last Mass for the senior class as students, giving thanks to God for the blessing of another school year. The Mass is followed by Awards Day, when senior awards are announced, including the class Acorns (students who have attended Oakcrest from sixth through twelfth grade), Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Athletic Awards, and Edwina Maksym Senior Thesis Award winners.
On commencement day, just like at some of the very first Oakcrest graduations years ago, graduates are dressed in white caps and gowns and are given a bouquet of red roses. The ceremony features an invocation from the school chaplain, Head of School remarks, a Commencement speaker, reflections and remarks delivered by the Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
