Dear Oakies -
I greatly enjoy receiving your updates, seeing you on campus, spending time with you at school events, and socializing with you at our alumnae events. The month of February has been full of these encounters!
This month, 3 alumnae presented their professional expertise to parents, faculty, and staff. Thank you, Ellen (Royals ‘99) Connoly, Anne (Royals ‘01) Vitz and Laura (Rowell ‘96) O’Neill for sharing your knowledge and passion with Oakcrest!
The sold-out Upper School shows, Mary Poppins, was an amazing production! The Friday night Patrons of the Arts Reception before the show was lovely and a great start to the evening! Saturday evening’s show was attended by a group of alumnae moms and their future Oakie daughters who read Mary Poppins in their mini book club in anticipation of the show. Throughout the weekend, we had 21 alumnae and 70 alumnae parents attend the performance. It was a wonderful showing of support for the current Oakies and their hard work and dedication to put on an incredible show. I know that I’m looking forward to more fantastic shows in the future and I’d like to remind you that as alumnae, we get a fantastic deal for the Patrons of the Arts Reception and Show tickets!
Thank you to all the alumnae that joined me in my home for the Alumnae Cocktail Party on February 20. It was a pleasure to gather with all of you and reminisce about our Oakcrest days. Although I hadn’t seen some of you in more than two decades, it seemed like no time had passed. That is truly the beauty of our Oakcrest experience and family; it bonds us in a way that even after so many years, the conversation is natural and comfortable. I hope that many more of you will join us for our upcoming events!
Mark your calendars for the Humanities Lecture and Cocktail Reception on March 12, Alumnae Week 2022 the week of April 2-9, and the Alumnae Mother/Daughter Brunch on May 21. I look forward to seeing you!
All the Best,
Maritere

Sisters Together at the University of Dallas
Grace Ferguson '18 is currently in her final semester at the University of Dallas. She is serving as an RA in a freshman women’s dorm and recently wrote and successfully defended her senior thesis on the Canticle of Mary in Luke’s Gospel. Grace just accepted a job offer at INOVA Fairfax Hospital as a medical scribe in the pediatric emergency room. After graduating from UD in May, she is looking forward to moving back to the DC area to start her job; she plans on attending nursing school the following year to earn her BSN.
Rose Ferguson '21 is absolutely loving her freshman year at UD! She is leaning towards being a Theology Major (like her big sister Grace) and she loves being roommates with fellow Oakcrest
grad Brigid Hale '21! Rose enjoyed playing intramural softball last semester and hopes to spend the Fall semester studying abroad in Rome!

In the summer of 2019, seventeen Oakies traveled to Kingston, Jamaica for Oakcrest’s first ever mission trip. The group worked with Mustard Seed Communities, a nonprofit organization that serves over 400 children, young adults, and families who belong to the most vulnerable groups in Jamaican society. The populations of Mustard Seed Communities’ homes include children and young adults with disabilities, children affected by HIV/AIDS, and teen mothers along with their babies. The team spent time with the residents, helping feed them, playing and singing and praying with them, assisting at a Field Day for all the residents, and simply being present with them.
In the summer of 2020 Oakcrest was unable to return in person because of the pandemic, but students held a walk-a-thon to raise money for Mustard Seed. The mission trip team ultimately succeeded in raising $10,000.

Lily James '19
Lily James’s journey to becoming a Division I track athlete started during her days as an Oakcrest Charger. “Running has always been a huge part of my life since I started on the Oakcrest track team in sixth grade,” Lily ‘19, who runs for the University of Virginia, explains. “It's been a blessing to
continue to grow as an athlete in college.” Read Lily's complete profile here.

Service at Oakcrest!
Service is an important part of character formation at Oakcrest, and Oakies have always been eager to help those in need in their surrounding community. In the 80s, Oakcrest had a Service Club. Members would help others in a variety of ways, from setting up for school assemblies to visiting the elderly at the Washington Home. Today, service at Oakcrest has grown to include All-School Service Day, the Service Initiatives Program, and a recent international mission trip. On All-School Service Day, the entire school community takes a morning to volunteer at organizations in the Northern Virginia/DC area. The Service Initiatives Program is comprised of student service coordinators who organize and manage different monthly service projects. In 2019, Oakcrest sent its first ever mission trip team to Kingston, Jamaica, to work with Mustard Seed Communities, an organization serving 400 children, young adults, and families who belong to the most vulnerable groups in Jamaican society. Additionally, every student completes a number of service hours each semester either within her family or the local community. Our alumnae community continues the Oakcrest tradition of service during Alumnae Week—last year Oakies came together for the first Alumnae Day of Service, helping to put together layette sets and bundle items for
A Woman’s Choice in Herndon, Virginia.
