Please join El Cerrito City staff and other volunteers at Baxter Creek Gateway Park in this jewel on the Ohlone Greenway. Meet your neighbors, enjoy fresh air, and help beautify the park while protecting the creek and watershed by cleaning up debris before it can enter the bay. Activities include litter removal, invasive plant removal and native plant care. All participants must complete a Volunteer Registration Form before participating. Please wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. You may also want to bring a bottle of water and gloves if you have them. The City will provide tools, bags, gloves, and sanitizer. There are no bathrooms at the park.

Once a trash-covered hillside, San Francisco’s Tompkins Stairway Garden is now a safe and welcoming street park, featuring a drought-tolerant garden in year-round bloom and a colorful tiled stairway. Dedicated attention from surrounding neighbors has transformed the site into a community greenspace and pedestrian corridor serving the Alemany Farmers’ Market and nearby schools and shopping districts. Once a month volunteers join a group of neighbors in Bernal Heights to care for the Tompkins Stairs Gardens. Volunteers will help with weeding, trimming, pruning, and cleaning up. Volunteers should wear clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Long sleeves, pants, a hat, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a water bottle are recommended. Due to COVID-19, masks are required for the duration of the event.

In recognition of El Cerrito Arbor Week, the City of El Cerrito Urban Forest Committee will host a workday in the Memorial Grove of the El Cerrito Hillside Natural Area. During this historic drought, measures can be taken to help trees survive; volunteers will be mulching trees to help them retain moisture and to insulate roots. You and your family can sign up to participate and help improve the health of the environment in your community! San Francisco City Impact is a Christian faith-based organization that serves the residents of the Tenderloin District by providing a safety net of different services for community members. One of the many services they focus on is feeding those that are hungry through a program called Rescue Mission. They are in need of volunteers to help at their Food Bank! There are two shifts available for volunteers to sign up for, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Morning volunteers can expect to help unload delivery trucks, organize food, and assemble grocery bags. Afternoon volunteers prepare hot dinner meals, serve residents a sit-down meal, converse and connect with residents while they eat, and help clean the facility once dinner finishes. All volunteers must follow CDC COVID-19 guidelines.

Location: 1150 Carroll Avenue, San Francisco. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot. To get from Carroll Ave to the Yosemite Slough site, we will caravan together using LEJ’s vehicle. It is a short 3-minute drive, and please be prepared to wear a mask during the entirety of the drive.

Ages: Children ages eight and older can participate alongside an adult

Time Commitment: Four hours; accommodations can be made for those who can’t attend for the duration of the event

California State Parks Foundation is an independent, member-supported nonprofit that mobilizes a diverse network of Californians to be active champions for our state parks. They are looking for volunteers to help with habitat restoration led by local nonprofit Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ) at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area! Volunteers will focus on planting California native plants to restore the Yosemite Slough area of the park. Minors who are volunteering must be accompanied by an adult and bring a waiver signed by their guardian. To volunteer, you will need to provide proof that you are fully vaccinated or provide negative COVID-19 test results within 72 hours prior to the workday.

Tending the Ancient Shoreline Hill is dedicated to preserving, restoring and celebrating Albany Hill. Albany Hill has a fascinating geological, natural, and human history. Their mission at TASH is to preserve the hill through habitat restoration and environmental education work. You can volunteer your time to help with the removal of invasive plants, trash clean-up, and the restoration of native plant populations! Due to COVID-19, volunteers are asked to wear a mask. If you have your own gloves and tools, please bring them with you. Extra tools and gloves will be provided.
