Nature in your Neighborhood Virtual Volunteering

Sutro Stewards & HandsOn Bay Area

Date/Time: Saturday, November 13, 10 - 11am. Orientation to the virtual project will be Saturday at 10am where we will introduce you to the project. A final group share out will be the next Tuesday at 5pm where you get to share your findings with your community. Please have all content ready for submission by 4pm on Tuesday.

Location: Online

Ages: Families with children age two and older are welcome. Orientation is required. Children must participate with an adult.

Time Commitment: One-hour orientation, plus time to complete your project

We are so excited to continue to offer this virtual volunteer opportunity created in partnership with HandsOn Bay Area  and Sutro Stewards. Nature in Your Neighborhood is an interactive, virtual program where we challenge you to go out into your backyards or neighborhoods to learn more about the plants that grow around you. Volunteers will attend an orientation with Sutro Stewards staff to learn how to identify Bay Area native and invasive plants and their impact on our local environment. We will supply you with all the resources you need to learn about the plants around you. Volunteers will then be tasked to venture into their backyards and neighborhoods to flex their new identification skills. You can create a short video about your plants, take photos, and do a write-up for our blog or create any other creative content for Sutro Stewards' use on social media platforms. Develop your own green thumbs and learn about the environment in your backyards and neighborhoods! Learn more here.

Volunteers’ energy and helping hands are absolutely critical to making this day a success.
COVID-19 safety guidelines will be enforced as follows:
  • You'll need to provide your own face covering to be worn at all times when on-site except while eating and drinking. Masks with valves aren't allowed.

Time Commitment: Varies

Millions of children and families living in America face hunger and food insecurity every day.

Thanksgiving means a time to give thanks and many families incorporate helping with holiday meals for their neighbors in need and those living with food insecurity. During the Covid-19 crisis, many food banks are struggling to keep up with the increased demand and will need extra donors and volunteers to accomplish their goal of making sure every family can have a holiday meal this year. This year marks an unprecedented time where many of us can give thanks and help those who are in such great need. Here are a few ways you and your family can help:

Letters of Love

Love for Our Elders

Date/Time: Ongoing

Location: Your own location

Ages: Everyone can participate

Time Commitment: Varies

Help Love for Our Elders fight loneliness with love by writing letters. Love For Our Elders has made a few changes in our letter writing process. One of the biggest changes is that we no longer accept letters at our P.O. Box. Instead, volunteers are now encouraged to send letters directly to nominated elders. Send letters directly to nominated elders here. We post information about elders who want mail on the first of every month. So take a few minutes, sit down, and write a letter. Tell them about yourself, share a joke or a riddle and let them know that they are loved. Click here for letter-writing FAQ’s.
