Dear Friends,

Summer might be winding down, but we have a jam-packed fall ahead filled with classes and events. We have a very special, very last minute addition to our September programs, a natural dyeing workshop with Gregorio Ruiz, a master dyer and weaver from Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, Mexico. Gregorio works in a deep-rooted and rich tradition of textile making, and we're excited to welcome him to Newbury. As we continue to learn more about craft practice in the past, the more connections we find with traditional practitioners across the globe. It's been said before, but we really are all interwoven.

On behalf of the team,

Justin Squizzero

Director

Natural Dyes of Teotitlán del Valle with Gregorio Ruiz (Bilingual Workshop)

Tuesday, September 16, 2025

12:00–4:00 p.m.

We are very excited to host guest instructor Gregorio Ruiz, a master dyer and weaver from Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, for a 1-day natural dyeing workshop.

Students will learn about the benefits of natural dyes and fibers, and follow the process of dyeing with natural materials found in Teotitlán del Valle to create their own hand-dyed organic cotton tee shirt. Instruction will include mordanting, dyeing, and drying/fixing dyed fibers, as well as the importance of natural dyeing in the Oaxacan region and additional demonstrations.

Dyes sources discussed in this workshop:

– Grana cochinilla (cochineal)

– Cempasúchil (marigold)

– Añil (indigo-bearing plants)

– Nogal (walnuts)

This workshop will be presented in both Spanish and English in collaboration with Prophecy Chocolate in Morrisville, Vermont. Materials will be billed separately at the workshop. Skeins of undyed wool yarn will be available for purchase for additional dyeing opportunities.

Participate in our Open Studio Sale

Attention friends and alumni of The Newbury School of Weaving: We are once again participating in the Vermont North by Hand Open Studio Tour on October 11–12 with a fundraiser featuring handwovens from our alumni and friends—that's you!

Ahead of the event, we will collect your weavings (towels, blankets, or any items made from your handwoven cloth), determine a price point together, and split all sales 50/50: 50% goes back to the maker, and 50% goes to support The Newbury School of Weaving. Any items that do not sell during the event will be kept at the school for a future sale unless the maker would like the item returned.

Our hope is that this will be a fun way for visitors to see the amazing work the school's community has been doing, and support both the weaver and school while taking home their very own piece of the experience to enjoy and share with others.

To participate or ask questions, please reach out to Emma directly: office@newburyschoolofweaving.org

Join us at Vermont Sheep & Wool

We're hitting the road to participate in the 37th Annual Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival, October 4–5 in Tunbridge, Vermont. We'll be demonstrating and sharing the weaving school with the fiber crowd, and hope to see many new and familiar faces there. If you're interested in helping us with our setup, breakdown, or giving our staff breaks during the weekend, email Emma, office@newburyschoolofweaving.org.

Our 2026 Calendar is Live!

It isn't too early to start making plans for next year's weaving and much of our schedule for 2026 is up on the website. We'll be adding more programs as they develop, but our core offerings are available now for registration.

Looking Back at August

We were too busy weaving to take many photos, but had full houses in our August classes.

As always, we can only do what we do with your generous support. Gifts of all sizes make a tremendous impact. Thank you.
