A Season of Hope and Renewal

As Easter approaches, we are reminded of the themes that define the season—hope, renewal, and the promise of brighter days ahead. Those same values are reflected every day at Fisher House Kansas City, where veterans and their families find comfort, community, and support while their loved ones receive medical care.

Just as spring brings new life, we are continually inspired by the strength and resilience of the military families who walk through our doors.

This season also gives us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by our nation’s veterans and their loved ones. At Fisher House Kansas City, we are honored to serve those who have served our country, providing a place where families can stay close during some of life’s most challenging moments. With the support of our generous community, we continue to ensure that no veteran’s family has to face those moments alone.

The Origination of the POW/MIA Day

War is a brutal act that humans have carried out ever since they learned to use sticks and stones as weapons. Prisoners of War (POW), the people who are captured by the opposition party as prisoners during the war, often endure atrocious treatment. National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day aims to honor those courageous fighters of the nation who had to endure.

National Former Prisoners of War Recognition Day occurs on the anniversary of the Bataan Death march. On April 9, 1942, the United States Forces surrendered to the Imperial Japanese Army on the Bataan Peninsula. All Survivors were loaded to a box train and brought to Camp O’Donnell. During this march, POWs were physically abused and tortured, causing the death of over 500 Americans. This is called the Bataan Death March. Later, this action of the Japanese Army was judged to be a Japanese War Crime.

Last month, we were honored to welcome Ms. Kansas to Fisher House Kansas City!

She rolled up her sleeves and helped with volunteer grocery shopping to make sure our guest families have everything they need during their stay. It’s acts of kindness like this that truly make a difference.
