Thursday, February 19, 2026 - Observing a Holy Lent

From Fr. Matt Phillips

Dear Friends in Christ

Yesterday we gathered with ashes on our foreheads and those ancient words in our ears: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ash Wednesday always tells us the truth about ourselves. We are fragile. We are finite. We are sinners. And we are deeply loved by God anyway. And from that truth, our forty-day-long Lenten journey begins.

Lent isn’t meant to be gloomy or punishing (though it can certainly feel that way at times). It’s meant to be honest and intentional–a season to clear away the noise and return to what matters most: our God who loves us in the midst of our imperfection, and whom we are called to reorient ourselves toward and love in return with all our heart, soul, and mind.

And before we received the ashen crosses on our heads, we heard a few practical ways to practice this sort of reorienting love and draw nearer to the God who first loved us. “I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word.”

Examination and repentance are the first things we do in our Lenten worship, and many will practice fasting and self-denial by giving something up for Lent: practices, habits, or activities that draw our attention away from the Divine. But many also choose to take on new practices (in addition to or instead of giving something up), like spending more time in prayer or studying Holy Scripture.

One simple way to take on such a practice is to let God’s Word meet you each day in a steady, ordinary rhythm. This year, members of our own parish have again written short daily Lenten Reflections based on each day’s appointed readings. They are thoughtful, prayerful, and grounded in the real lives of the people we sit beside each Sunday. And I hope that these reflections will help each of us to spend a little more time with God each day, considering not only God’s love for us, but how we are being moved to better love both God and neighbor in return.

If you’re looking for a gentle, faithful way to observe a holy Lent this year, I encourage you to subscribe and read along each day by clicking here. May these forty days draw us nearer to Christ and one another as we walk the road toward Easter together.

Yours in Christ,

Matt+

Writing as a Tool for Deeper Connection

This series will take place on Thursday February 26th, March 5th, and March 12th from 5:30-7:30 pm

Please sign up ahead of time at this link here.

Perhaps now more than ever, vulnerable, heart felt connection is the key to remain empathetic and loving humans. In a world filled with many jagged edges and pain, and in an era encouraging us to openly adopt disruptive technologies, connecting to ourselves and our inner knowing first, is essential to remaining human.

In this three part series, writing teacher Anna Floch Arcello, will help writers compose and edit a core story, statement of faith, poem, essay, article, or journal. Perhaps you have a story or a piece sitting in your heart you have always meant to write, or perhaps you want to connect with others and listen to their stories.

This Lenten season, consider bringing in writing as a tool to express, reflect, and better know your voice, yourself, and others. The focus and genre of writing pieces will be up to the writers – Anna will help you generate ideas, discuss, revise and craft a single core story over the course of the series. This practice of reflection through writing and the work of sharing our story, makes us more empathetic, and better, more loving servants, and encourages a deeper connection to our uniquely human voice. We will begin by reading a few essays as inspiration ahead of the first session, and then lay the groundwork for crafting our own. All levels of writers are most welcome, including those who may have joined in the previous writing series. - Anna Floch-Arcello

Music this Week at Christ Church

by Michael Batcho

This Sunday is the First Sunday in Lent.

With the shift of the liturgical season, there will be noticeable changes in the music. The services will begin starkly with the procession of ministers to the altar accompanied by the solemn tolling of a bell. After all have taken their places, the choir will lead the congregation in chanting The Great Litany. The updated and simple text for the litany comes from Enriching Our Worship, a resource for Episcopal parishes. After the first reading the singing of the psalm will be antiphonal between the choir and the congregation. There will be silence as the offerings are brought to the altar. The Sanctus S124 and Fraction Anthem S161 come from David Hurd's New Plainsong Mass. On the remaining Sundays in Lent at the beginning of the service we will kneel and sing the Kyrie S91 and sing the response to the prayer of the people S 106. All of these combined definitely signals that we have entered the Church's annual penitential season.

Family Choir for HDTF!

Our next Handing Down the Faith Sunday is March 01. For that service we invite youth and parents to join the choir. If you and your child(ren) like to sing this is the perfect opportunity for you to participate as a family.

With the choir, you'll lead the congregation in the hymns and service music as well as sing a simple anthem at the offertory.

There is one rehearsal on Wednesday, February 25, from 6:00 PM - 6:45 PM. On Sunday morning there is a brief rehearsal and warm-up with the choir at 8:50 AM.

Contact Michael if you have any questions or would like to sign up! Registrations will be taken until Monday, February 23.

Topic: Repentance & Confession

Questions to Consider: When you pray the General Confession on Sunday, do you feel like you are speaking honestly from the heart or mostly reciting familiar words; what makes the difference for you? If repentance is less about breaking rules and more about turning again toward life with God, how might that shape the way we talk about sin? How does viewing God as a loving parent rather than a harsh judge affect your willingness to admit mistakes and ask for forgiveness?

To learn more about this event, please email the Rev. Matt Phillips.
