You might not have noticed the line at the very top of each Arts Blast, but do take a look this week. It tells readers the issue number and the date of publication. Today I had the mind-blowing kick of typing Volume 3, Issue 1. I actually had to go to the archives at willimiller.com to make sure Arts Blast really is entering a third year. I'd use the old chestnut, "Time flies when you're having fun," but I think the past year proves it flies whether or not we're having a good time.
Arts Blast could not have happened without the friendship and support of our charter sponsors and the advertisers and sponsors who joined in later. I'm humbled and delighted when a new subscriber pops up in my inbox, despite the curtailment of anticipated, traditional arts events. So many bad times have come to so many good and talented people, that it's often hard to see the silver lining in the Covid cloud, but it's clear that the resilience, determination, and the creativity needed to soar above the clouds are alive and well in all of us.
Hang in artists, musicians, dancers, writers, arts presenters, and yes, you in the audience. We're coming back strong!👏😍👏
Catch up with events at Willi Miller's Arts Blast on Facebook and pick up some laughs and interesting info on the Willi Miller's Arts Blast Extras page.

Artist Leslie Stokes - Contributing writer Warren Onluck
|
|
Ft. Pierce painter Leslie Stokes grew up adoring her father, a dashing figure in the Secret Service who protected three U.S. presidents. “He was revered by the other agents and he taught me self-discipline and his work ethic,” she says. But she idolized her mother, a professional singer and painter, who made her believe she could do anything she set her mind to. Leslie chose painting.
“I can’t remember a time I didn’t have a brush in my hand,” she recalls. At every stage of her education, her mother supported her. Leslie went off to France while she was at the University of Kentucky to improve her brushwork in Monet’s legendary garden at Giverny, emboldened by her mom’s encouragement.
She succeeded then and she’s continued to grow since as an artist. Her work is in public and private collections throughout Florida and the Southeastern United States. She is represented by Ron Pedonti Interior Design in Orlando.
|
|
Her solo exhibition at Vero’s Center for Spiritual Care Jan. 8-29 is further evidence that she has been focusing intensely on her painting. Viewers often tend to see her work, with its expressive use of color and form, as “beautiful.” It’s not a word Leslie would use. “I think they’re about how I feel emotionally about color...how I feel emotionally about the brushwork. They’re certainly about the energy it takes to create a painting.”
Center director Carol Ludwig says Leslie’s work is charismatic in that it can calm a room or bring it to life, depending on her intention.
With this, Leslie might agree. “Many of my paintings have a certain amount of tranquility to them,” she says. “They’re a little mysterious and not totally solved. They have a certain calming effect, but they’re not boring.”
To see Leslie’s work, call the Center at 772-567-1233. Viewings are by appointment only because of the COVID crisis and masks are required.

A New Lady in Residence at Bailey Matthews Shell Museum
|
|
There's been a lot of Facebook interest lately in a video on Netflix, My Octopus Teacher. Fans and not-yet fans will be delighted to read this from Carly Hulse, senior aquarist at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. " It was a great film, and we have had lots of interest in our cephalopods since the movie came out!"
When I got the eNewsletter from the museum, I contacted the director with questions. Hulse, who cares for the hundreds of creatures living there, was kind enough to satisfy my curiosity. After watching the Netflix film, I had some concerns about a lone octopus in captivity. Will she be bored? Will she be lonely? What's her name? "Currently, she does not have an official name.
For now, we have just been referring to her as the GPO (short for giant Pacific octopus). I am unsure how we will go about the naming of her."
|
|
"You are correct, octopuses are extremely intelligent! To accommodate her intelligence, we offer her daily enrichment. Enrichment is a process for enhancing an animal's environment within the context of the animals' behavioral biology and natural history. It increases the quality of life of the octopus by allowing it to demonstrate species appropriate behaviors, offers mental stimulation and decreases the likelihood of undesired behaviors. Our enrichment program includes a variety of toys, puzzles, target training, tactile work, and more!
"Her new exhibit is just over 1000 gallons of cold saltwater. The Giant Pacific Octopus is a solitary species, meaning that the only time they are seen with another GPO is when they are mating or fighting, so she is content being alone."
Look for webcam coverage soon.

Who doesn’t remember using LEGO pieces as a child to build little worlds born from your imagination? Well, the designers over at LEGO never stopped. And now, they’ve released their latest creation: two new build kits, aimed at adults with a flair for plant life—or lack thereof. If your building skills are far more developed than your green thumb, then the LEGO Flower Bouquet and the LEGO Bonsai Tree are definitely the “plants” for you.
These two sets were created as part of the LEGO Botanical Collection for adults, and they were designed as an aid to creativity and stress relief. Read the full story online.
