President's Corner
Tomorrow is Election Day. I'm always stunned by how few people actually vote in this country. We should never take our freedom for granted, as so many in this world have none. GET OUT THERE AND VOTE TOMORROW!!!

OK, off my soapbox. Last week, we celebrated our 2022 The Best of Us award recipients. Good food, fun and comfy clothes, and great community spirit! Thank you to all who attended and to our wonderful sponsors who made it all happen.

Next week, our Lunch n Learn will be a Chamber 101 session. Whether you have forgotten or are new to our ranks, please come and learn all of our opportunities and how to use our website. So, bring your lunch and come with questions.

Short n sweet this month from me but we still have loads of networking and learning opportunities left in the year. Get your moneys worth from us, ENGAGE!

Until next month....

Have a Student Struggling in School? Meet Your New Educational Advocate

My name is Dr. Patricia O’Malley and I have recently moved my business to Ocean Pines to serve the Eastern Shore. Compass Educational Services LLC specializes in educational consultation, evaluation, and advocacy for parents and other professionals to support the unique needs of students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia and ADHD.

I earned my doctorate in Applied Developmental Psychology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Prior to obtaining my degree at UMBC, I was a general education teacher in an inclusive classroom in New Jersey, a test administrator for various educational research projects, an Assessment Coordinator at Kennedy Krieger High School, the Project Director of School-Based Support Services at Kennedy Krieger Institute, and an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, Stevenson University, Goucher, and Notre Dame University of Maryland.

At present, in addition to evaluating students and helping parents with the IEP and 504 process, I continue to be an educational consultant to review and monitor special education programs for compliance with COMAR at the Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School and the Lillie May Carroll Jackson Public Charter School. At the Dyslexia Tutoring Program in Baltimore, a free tutoring program for low-income children and adults with language-based reading difficulties, I continue to serve as a program evaluator to review the design, data collection, and reporting methods for program effectiveness.

Support to parents includes:
  • Assistance with the IEP and 504 Plan development or process.
  • Formal evaluation to diagnose learning disabilities.
  • Collaboration with other professionals to address a child's unique needs.
  • Assistance with identifying a child’s most appropriate placement.
  • Monitoring the child’s progress while enrolled in a school or program.

School-based supports and services include:
  • Assisting with overall compliance issues related to special education services and record keeping.
  • Provision of training, staff development, and technical assistance to school personnel in matters pertaining to the IEP Team process.
  • Developing appropriate guidance for school leaders on current best practices in specialized instruction for students with disabilities.
  • Monitoring the quality and implementation of IEPs based on federal, state, and school district quality IEP standards.
  • Provision of training and feedback for teachers in administering, scoring, interpreting, and writing quality educational assessment reports.

I look forward to supporting families on the Eastern Shore and am offering a free half-hour of initial consultation to address questions.

Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT)

Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) was established in 1972 and has grown over the years to be the voice for our waterways and the communities that live within. Our operating area is focused on the Coastal Bays watershed which extends into the surrounding Lower Eastern Shore region. We are one of the oldest environmental organizations on Delmarva.

ACT is a member of the global Waterkeeper Alliance and hosts the Assateague Coastkeeper, working to assure our communities have access to swimmable, fishable, and drinkable water. For over 50 years ACT has been working arm in arm with diverse community partners to protect and defend the health of Delmarva’s coastal waters through advocacy, education, science, and the enforcement of just and equitable clean water laws. Whether our Assateague Coastkeeper is on the water tracking down polluters, in courtrooms enforcing environmental laws, advocating in town meetings, or teaching in classrooms, ACT speaks for the waters it defends – with the collective strength of our local community.

At ACT, conservation is both an ethic we espouse and a practice we promote. We encourage and facilitate efforts to practice what we preach, and we advocate for policies that support people and organizations to become active environmental stewards.

Our Coast Kids program launched in 2003, which provides environmental education and interactive nature experiences for area youth and their families. Offering monthly membership events and excursions around the region, a “Little Scientist” series for schools and community-based organizations, and most recently a “Nature Explorers” summer camp, Coast Kids allows ACT to educate and engage our next generation of environmental stewards.

Our Tidal Waters Monitoring Program, established in 2010, measures bacteria levels in some of the most heavily recreated areas on the Eastern Shore. We report to the public, using the Swim Guide app to monitor where and when it is safe to go into the water during the busy summer season. This can be easily accessed by phone or computer, allowing real-time data to be accessible on or off the water.

The issues may vary, the forums may shift, and the tactics may change, but the underlying goals of ACT’s advocacy and educational efforts stay the same: to protect our waters and the people, plants, and animals that depend on them, and to hold polluters and policymakers accountable for their actions…or inaction.

Have you looked at your utility bill lately?
Join the Chamber Energy Purchasing Cooperative

Have you looked at your utility bill lately? Are you concerned about how much you are spending? What's going on?

The war, inflation, and hot temperatures are just some of the factors causing rates to hit a 50-year high! As Bloomberg News reported,
“The U.S. Energy Department Secretary Jennifer Granholm was spot on with where oil and gas are going — and it isn't staying at home. Nearly 75 percent of natural gas produced in the United States is being sold to Europe. Many countries in Europe have higher prices for gas than the U.S.” Natural gas is the major producer of electricity.

CQI Associates will continue to watch the market and seek creative ways to provide protection, stability, and savings for our customers. Clients with agreements, ending between now and May 2023, should contact their CQI representative to assure their paperwork is up to date. This will allow us the opportunity to jump on any opportunities that present themselves between now and then.

The Chamber of Commerce Energy Purchasing Cooperative program provides you with an option to help seek pricing that provides savings when compared to the utility rates and offers you long-term budget stability.

Maryland passed the Climate Solutions Now Act requiring a 60% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2031. Any business with a 35,000 sq. ft. or more facility, schools, and municipalities that do not comply will be assessed a penalty of $51 or more per ton. Penalties could start as early as 2024. This could cost a small facility, school or municipality thousands of dollars.
